Over the past couple of weeks there has been a burn ban in Cass County and some other counties close to Cass in Indiana. This burn ban started on October 7, 2024 and it ended on November 5, 2024. At the meeting of the Board of Commissioners for Cass County, Emergency Management Agency, Director Buffum reported the field fires that had occurred over the past 48 hours. Director Buffum also reported the weather data, which forecasted that there would not be rain until through October 16.
Fire departments from Logansport, Royal Center, and other surrounding areas helped put out the massive and destructive field fires. Fulton County’s Liberty Township Fire Department also helped put out the fires and provided people to help put the fires out. The first fires occurred on October 6th in Lucerne and Twelve Mile areas. The Twelve Mile fire departments reported over 42 acres burned from the destructive fires.
The main causes of these fires spreading were gusty winds and poor visibility. These fires were only fueled by the strong winds and horrible conditions. The burn ban made people unable to have campfires, bonfires, and things like fireworks or anything that can cause a fire to occur in a field. Many counties around Cass County were affected by these burning fields.
The Cass County board of commissioners decided to let the burn ban expire on Monday, November 4, 2024 at midnight. Since the burn ban has finally lifted, the farmers are relieved that their crops are no longer in danger. The citizens of Cass County and the surrounding counties are also very much relieved that their houses and families are no longer in danger from the burning fields. Hopefully all of the farmers that suffered from the burning fields can recover quickly and still have most of their crop. This burn ban was put in so that everyone could stay safe, and now that the burn ban is lifted we know that everyone can stay safe.
