Another historical year for the Lady Kings is still within reach. Coach Amor gave us an update, “We’re having a great season. Being 12-2, we really can’t complain. There have been games where we could have performed better, but with a veteran group, they’ve shown the ability to finish games strong, even when things haven’t gone smoothly.” The Lady Kings have not taken any win or loss lightly and have shown up in the gym ready to work every day. The Lady Kings are nearing the end but their intensity is nowhere near done.
Throughout the season the Lady Kings have accomplished many of the goals they had set. Amor added, “One goal we couldn’t reach last season was winning our County, and we were able to accomplish that this year.” Aftin Griffin was asked what some of her goals were for the team and herself, “A big team goal that we have accomplished was to win the county championship. This was my first year winning the tournament, so this was very exciting for me. A goal for myself this season was to beat my personal record of 23 points from last year against Kokomo. I beat it (the record) against Eastern with 27 points.” With achieving these goals certain challenges come up. Aftin was asked what some of her challenges this season were and stated, “A big and obvious personal challenge that I have to overcome is my height. It is not easy being the smallest on the court, but thankfully I have speed to make up for it. Being the smallest and shortest on the court means I don’t get many rebounds and I do get shoved around a lot. Another personal challenge is confidence. Sometimes if I start off bad shooting, my confidence drops, and I don’t end up having a great game. This is something I still need to work on, but I feel like I have improved a little since my freshman year.” Aftin is strong and works her best to work against the adversity she faces.
The Lady Kings start sectionals the first week of February. Coach Amor was asked what some of his post-season goals are for this season and said, “Our post-season goals are to match last year’s success. We want to win another sectional, regional, and hopefully go even further. However, the IHSAA has made significant changes to the tournament format. Many 3A schools have dropped down to 2A and are now competing in the 2A tournament, and our sectional has changed drastically. We’ll need to play exceptionally well late in the season to reach our goals.” This season and last season were both full of success. Aftin was asked what some differences were from this year to last and said, “Some differences this year are that we don’t have the same height as we did last year. Last year, Heta and Kinsey added a huge advantage to the team with the amount of offensive and defensive rebounds. Their defense was always hard to score against. Faith added points and steals to our games too. The seniors added huge advantages to the team last year that we had to adapt to without this year.” Despite the player losses, the Lady Kings have continued to push through and continue on the road to success.
All in all, the Lady Kings have won, lost, and worked to fight to make sure this season was full of success. They will continue to play their best day in and day out and will keep pushing for the next month of the season. The Lady Kings have high hopes for the postseason but are aware of the challenges they will face. Good luck Lady Kings!
