As the swim team is diving into the near end of the season, the girls’ swim team is preparing for TRC (Three Rivers Conference) and sectionals. With the girls’ record of 6-3, they have had a bright season and still have more to go. The coaches have been working hard all season to prepare the girls for the upcoming events.
Coach Mandy Hall is happy with the season’s outcome so far and says the girls have been swimming well even though they have had a hard schedule this season. Hall said, ¨Overall, the meets that we have lost we have been right with the other teams up through the last two events where our team depth just wasn’t enough to come out with a team victory.¨ Her expectations for conference and sectionals are for the girls to represent Lewis Cass with, ¨class¨. Hall says the girls have been training for more than eleven weeks to prepare for these meets. Coach Hall stated, ¨Although we don’t have enough depth to take away a team championship, we have a lot of girls who are talented and driven to come out with some individual championship races (for the conference), and many girls who will be able to make a podium finish at both conference and sectional.¨ All of the coaches are looking forward to watching their swimmers and divers reach their goals at these events.
Senior, Maryn Zeck, was asked about her expectations for the outcome of TRC and sectionals. Zeck said she has high hopes for this year. Her goals for her final TRC and sectionals are to ¨…cherish my time swimming and to soak up all the memories I will be making during the days.¨ Maryn wants to swim the 100 backstroke and the 200 IM (Individual Medley). When asked if her senior year had gone the way she wanted Zeck responded with, ¨ Yes, it has. I have been pleased with my times and the team’s overall performance. Our relay has had girls that have stepped up to fill spots from people in the past, and I could not be more proud of them.¨
Sophomore, Mia Hall, thinks her season has gone well so far. Mia said, ¨I have had a lot more challenges because of my hip problems I have had during cross country, but it has been a really fun year and the meets have been really fun.¨ Hall does not currently have any school records on the board yet, but she is a part of the, ¨Under a Minute Club¨ which is when a swimwear swims a 100 freestyle in under one minute. Mia is both excited and nervous for TRC because she was a conference champion last year in the 100 Breaststroke event and wants to keep her title. For sectionals, Hall is hoping to place in the top eight for all of her events (and make the podium). She expects to place in both TRC and sectionals. Hall wants to hopefully get first in TRC and be in the top five for sectionals.
Lastly, Sydney Holmquist, a senior at Lewis Cass gave insight on how her last season is progressing. Sydney’s favorite thing about swimming this year has been the people who swim in her lane. Holmquist said, ¨They make practice easy to look forward to, and I have enjoyed becoming better friends with each of them.¨ Sydney’s records for her two main events are 28.22 seconds for her 50 freestyle and 1:03.01 for her 100 freestyle. For TRC and sectionals, she wants to go under the minute in the 100 freestyle and under 28 seconds in the 50 freestyle.
The girls have had a great season so far and still have some left to go. With TRC and sectionals on the way, the Queenfish will be practicing hard. All of them have a great time swimming and enjoy being around positive teammates. Come out and support your lady swimmers at their next meet against Kokomo at 5:30 p.m away at Kokomo.
