Since September 5, 2024, the 2024-25 National Football League (NFL) season has been underway. This season has included the dominance of teams such as the Kansas City Chiefs and the Detroit Lions, as well as the struggles of the Carolina Panthers and New York Giants. With the regular season coming to a close this past weekend, 16 teams’ seasons have ended. The remaining fourteen squads look to make a deep run in the 2024-25 playoffs. This year’s playoff contention is stacked with many fantastic football teams and is looking to be a memorable competition.
One of the front runners in the race this season is the Kansas City Chiefs. The Chiefs finished the regular season with a record of 15-2, which is tied for the best in the NFL. The team has been led by their superstar quarterback, Patrick Mahomes. Chris Jones, the team’s starting defensive tackle, has also led the group to great successes on the defensive side of the game. The Kansas City Chiefs have been crowned Super Bowl champions for the past two years and are looking to do it again this season. However, the road to this goal is not going to be an easy one.
As the Chiefs lead the American Football Conference (AFC), the Detroit Lions are at the top of the National Football Conference (NFC). The Lions have not been fortunate in finding success in the past couple of football seasons. Last season, however, was a bright light for the team as they ended with a record of 12-5. They also fought all the way to the NFC conference championship game, where they fell short of the San Francisco 49ers (ChampsorChumps). Detroit has carried over their successes into this season, by being one of the most superior teams in the league. The squad has been crushing the competition with the exception of falling short only twice. This year’s Detroit Lions team is home to some of the best in the league. Among these greats are veteran quarterback, Jared Goff and the running back duo of Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery. These three have posed many challenges for opposing teams. In the Lion’s previous win, they bested the Minnesota Vikings with a score of 31-9. Gibbs led the charge with 139 rushing yards and four touchdowns (Detroitlions). CBSSports.com’s John Breech stated, “This victory clinched the NFC North, the No. 1 seed, a bye, and home-field advantage through the NFC side of the bracket for Detroit.” The Detroit Lions are one of the favorites to win the title this season and are going to be tough to handle for anyone who competes against them.
Another team fortunate enough to participate in the playoffs is the Denver Broncos. The Broncos come in as the seventh seed in the AFC (NFL). Denver’s season has not been as pretty as the Chiefs’ or Lions’ seasons have been, yet they still find themselves in a playoff position. This year’s playoff visit is the first for the Broncos since the 2015 season (ESPN). Denver has been led this year by rookie quarterback, Bo Nix out of Oregon. Broncos wide receiver, Courtland Sutton commented on Nix as quarterback and stated, “To see a young guy have so much drive and passion for the game, it makes everyone around you better. For your quarterback to be the guy that has that energy, has that juice … it makes everybody else in the entire building better, and he’s that guy.” Nix has fit in nicely on the Bronco’s squad and is looking to lead the team to a deep playoff run.
Nix, however, is not the only rookie quarterback leading his team to the postseason. The Commanders also acquired a fantastic first year out of Lousiana State University (LSU) by the name of Jayden Daniels. Daniels shocked the NFL world with his outstanding skill and leadership ability. He is now the fifth-ranked quarterback in the league in just his first year (ESPN). Commanders Head Coach, Dan Quinn said, “Jayden is an incredible player, and he’s absolutely a blast to coach with his confidence, humility, and playmaking ability.” Washington will continue to look to their young star to keep their season alive.
This year’s NFL postseason is looking to be an exciting one. From remarkable running backs to quality quarterbacks, the playoffs are loaded with talent. Tune in this Saturday, January 11, to watch the start of this exciting playoff season!
