It is that time of year when football fans get ready for the biggest game of the year. Most fans actually watch the game for the football part, the halftime show, the Puppy Bowl (which raises awareness about adopting pets from shelters, and rescuing abandoned animals), or for some they enjoy watching the commercials. The commercials are one of the many ways the NFL earns most of its money. According to USA Today Ad Meters’, Rick Suter, in the 2024 Super Bowl ads for the game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers the NFL managed to earn $600 million dollars for in-game ad revenue. To put that in perspective, it costs around $233,333 per second for an advertisement!
According to Sports Illustrated, analysts conducted a study that found more than 40% of people surveyed state they watch the Super Bowl for the commercials rather than the actual game. I took it upon myself and did some research. I researched several different websites including the top-ranked Super Bowl ad that ended up being Coca-Cola’s 1979 “Hey Kid, Catch.” Though the top-ranked commercial was the Budweiser Frogs, according to the Nielsen official website, the most viewed Super Bowl commercial of all time is the Dorito Ninja commercial that aired in 2010 with 116,231,920 and counting views.
According to Entertainment Weekly’s, Debby Wolfinsohn, the top five Super Bowl commercials are #1 “Budweiser Frogs” from Budweiser: 1995, #2 the “Hey Kid, Catch” from Coca-Cola: 1979, #3 the “1984” from Apple in 1984, #4 “Hare Jordan” from Nike in 1993, and #5 “Bud Ice Penguin” made by Budweiser in 1996. According to Fox Business’, Eleanor Terret and Charlie Gasparino, Budweiser is one of the biggest producers of Super Bowl commercials and is the largest commercial partner to the NFL for the Super Bowl. Even though Budweiser has spent such a large amount of money on commercials for the Super Bowl they do not have the most expensive commercial on the market. According to the Quadratics official website, the most expensive Super Bowl commercial was produced by Amazon and cost a total of $28,011,912. The commercial was the “Mind Reader” featuring Scarlett Johanson and Colin Jost in 2022 for the Super Bowl game between the Los Angeles Rams and the Cincinnati Bengals.
In conclusion, people can have their opinions on whatever commercial they think is the best. Personally, I think the best Super Bowl commercial of all time is the “Alexa Loses Her Voice” commercial from Amazon for the LII Super Bowl. This commercial is my favorite because it uses a variety of different actors and actresses which makes it an entertaining commercial rather than a boring typical commercial. Then coming in at a close second, my favorite commercial is the “Hare Jordan” commercial from Nike; I like this commercial because it has Bugs Bunny in it. Then, rounding out the top three, I really enjoyed the 2014 Doritos “Time Machine” commercial. The number four spot is the 2011 Volkswagen commercial called “The Force.” And finally, finishing off my list is a tie between the Budweiser “Puppy Love” commercial from 2014, and the Budweiser “Lost Dog” commercial made in 2015.
The Super Bowl will air on February 9, 2025, between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles. The game will be streamed on Tubi, DirectTV, Fubo, Fox Sports app, and more. Stay tuned for the big game to see which team will reign the trophy this year!
