Every year at the end of the year Spotify comes out with a Spotify Wrapped. This allows people to see the top 5 artists they listened to the most, the top 5 songs they have listened to, and the amount of minutes of music they have listened to. My Spotify wrapped this year with my most listened-to artist The Weeknd. According to Cloud Cover Music, “teens and young adults from the ages 16 to 24 tend to listen to the most music.” I agree with this because I listen to music every day when I am struggling or when I feel bored I listen to music. Music helps free my mind from anything bothering me. There are many music artists who create music in the pop genre with one of the popular choices being The Weeknd.
According to Spotify, The Weeknd has produced roughly 1020 songs altogether. Included in that, The Weeknd has produced 51 albums and 13 tracks. Recently, The Weeknd just released his newest album Hurry Up Tomorrow. According to Niner Times’, Ronnie Taylor, “The Weeknd’s latest album is the conclusion of his musical journey under the name The Weeknd as he adapts to new experiences under his legal name, Abel Tesfaye.” Taylor stated, “The sixth studio album serves as the final in the album trilogy that started with After Hours then continued with Dawn FM then finally ending with Hurry Up Tomorrow.” He then proceeds to say “The album starts with the song Wake Me Up which is a collaboration with French duo Justice, the tone is set with the dynamic breakthrough starting off with a restrained tempo that leads up to an upbeat rhythm. The song dives into existing themes, then talks about the singer’s internal struggles.”
The album then transitions into the song “Reflecting Laughing” which features contributions from Travis Scott, and Florence + The Machine. The album also contains many new popular songs including “Cry For Me” featuring Lana Del Ray, “Baptized in Fear”, “São Paulo”, “The Abyss”, and many more. Taylor proceeded to say “The collaborations with artists like Lana Del Ray, Justice, Giorgio, Morodor, and Scott help make the album by exploring fame’s downfalls, romantic ambition, and mental struggles. The song “Enjoy the Show” helps highlight all of those themes. Even though the second half of the album tends to lack momentum, it wraps up with the passionate note with the title of the album Hurry Up Tomorrow.” Then lastly Taylor said, “The song is a ghostly, gospel-tinged serenade about his life of sin, a departure from the darker tones earlier in the album.”
After listening to the album Hurry Up Tomorrow. I think it is a well-constructed masterpiece. The way he expressed his emotions and struggles through the beats and lyrics really created a deeper connection when listening to the music. I thought a few of the songs were odd, letting me know they were less than a minute, and he just talked and did not sing. Overall, my favorite song from the album is “Cry For Me” because he sings it with such great emotion it draws you in and helps you connect with the song better.
Fellow Lewis Cass students juniors Ruby Villanueva and Ava Hubner had this to say about the album. Villanueva stated she thinks the new album is really good and she enjoyed listening to it. She then proceeded to state that the song “Until We’re Skin & Bones” was a bit odd because it was less than a minute long. Overall, Ruby stated she would recommend listening to the album. Hubner stated her favorite songs in the album were “Cry For Me” and “Baptized in Fear.” She also recommends listening to the whole album because she states it is the type of album where you can just sit there and listen to it and think about your thoughts.
In conclusion, I highly recommend listening to the album if you love The Weeknd and being able to connect to the music. You can also keep in mind that this is the last album Abel will produce as The Weeknd. You can listen to Hurry Up Tomorrow on any music streaming app.
