Watching movies is common when people stay at home and relax. Watching movies in movie theaters is also common among people, but most people do not discuss what genre of movie they are watching.
There are many movie genres, my personal favorite is horror or comedy. I like the intense scenes of horror movies and the noticeable foreshadowing as well. I also enjoy comedy because I love being able to laugh at jokes in the movies. Forbes.com’s Darreonna Davis said, “Horror movies are defined as those with intentions to ignite fear within their audiences. Key elements of a successful horror movie do just that and feature ghosts, gore, monsters, and jump scares,” according to entertainment publication Backstage. Subgenres of horror movies are ghost stories and zombie horrors. Davis also said, “Comedy movies are defined as those with intentions to humor the audience. Comedies are often marked by situational irony, amusement, and happy endings. Some subgenres of comedy are slapstick comedy, parody, and black comedy.” One of my favorite horror movies has to be The Conjuring and my favorite comedy movie has to be Hubie Halloween. Some other movie genres that are popular but are not recognized by their genres are romantic comedy, true-crime drama, mystery, and fantasy.
The Courier reached out to a few students offering their opinions on different movie genres. Sophomore, Brookelynn Biddle said, “The movie genre that I would rather choose is romance. I would choose this genre because I love the feeling of happy endings at the end of romance movies. Romance is a big thing and if someone puts that much effort into a relationship it shows a lot.” She also said, “ My top three favorite movie genres are romance, comedy, and horror. I love romance because of the happy feeling it gives you at the end of movies. I love comedy because who could go wrong with comedy? Laughing is my favorite thing. Lastly, I love horror movies because the adrenaline you have watching them is such a good feeling and the jump scares are always the best part.” Brookelynn finally said her favorite movie marathon would have to be High School Musical because “I love the energy and how it’s high school students. It shows a lot of positive emotion and I love it, it fits in with most of my favorite genres. I could watch it for hours.”
Sophomore, Olivia Parker was also asked a few questions about her favorite movie genres, as well as different movie questions. When asked what her favorite movie was, she said, “My favorite movie is Back to the Future. I love Back to the Future because it is just so nostalgic and was way before its time. I love the characters, especially Doc Brown. I can watch this movie 200 times and still love it and be able to find some new Easter eggs. I also just grew up watching Back to the Future basically every day. It is definitely a comfort movie.” Olivia was also asked about the worst and best movies she had seen. Olivia said, “The worst movie I have ever seen is Hereditary. Hereditary just has way too much happening. It’s very hard to follow and actually know what’s going on. Hereditary also made me feel almost guilty after watching it. The best movie that I have ever seen is Nosferatu. Nosferatu is definitely a movie meant for people who love the original silent film and the original Dracula. The cinematography of this film is absolutely beautiful and the casting is genius. Lily-Rose Depp and Bill Skarsgard were amazing in this movie.” Lastly, Olivia was asked if she had to choose between romance or comedy, which genre would she choose? Parker said she would choose romance because she “loves a good cheesy romance movie with a predictable ending.”
Lastly, Sophomore, Cadence Wrightsman was asked her thoughts about what she liked when watching TV, Wrightsman said, “Yes, I enjoy watching TV. Especially binge-watching shows. I like having something to constantly watch but then when the show is over, I’m not happy about it, but I move on to another show. A lot of the time I will rewatch a show multiple times.” Cadence was also asked if she would rather choose animated movies or live-action movies. She prefers live-action because it “feels more real to her, obviously because it is not animated, and because live-action is more thrilling.” When choosing a movie, Cadence decides by genre. “I really enjoy romance movies, comedy movies, or action movies. With comedy movies, say if Kevin Hart is in it or Adam Sandler, I will pick those movies to watch.”
Movies are simple activities when being with friends, or when relaxing at home. If you had to choose a favorite movie genre, which one would you choose?
