Bring Change to Mind: A Club Dedicated to Mental Health at Lewis Cass High School
In recent years, mental health awareness has become an increasingly important topic in schools across the nation. At Lewis Cass High School, the need for mental health resources became especially urgent following the heartbreaking loss of two students to suicide last school year. In response, the school introduced Bring Change to Mind (BC2M)—a club dedicated to raising awareness, breaking the stigma surrounding mental health, and providing support for students who may be struggling.
The Inspiration Behind BC2M
Lindsay Adams, one of the key figures behind the establishment of BC2M at Lewis Cass, explains that the need for mental health support was evident. “Mental health is everywhere, and with the year that Lewis Cass had last year, it’s a great addition to our school system to add this mental health group. We were selected to participate in this group, so we are blessed to have the opportunity to raise awareness in our community.” BC2M has existed in other schools for years, but its recent introduction to Cass County schools is a significant step toward addressing the mental health challenges that affect students daily.
The Mission and Goals of BC2M
The primary mission of BC2M is to break the stigma associated with mental health and promote open conversations. “Our goal is to raise awareness for mental health that affects so many and to try to break the stigma in regards to people’s thoughts on mental health,” Adams states. Too often, individuals struggling with mental health issues are met with misunderstanding and judgment, which prevents them from seeking the help they need. By fostering open dialogue, BC2M aims to change that narrative and create a supportive environment for all students.
Club Activities and Initiatives
BC2M organizes a variety of activities to promote mental wellness among students. “We have a bi-weekly meeting where we discuss different topics in regards to mental health, self-care, self-esteem, and so much more,” says Adams. The club officers utilize the BC2M portal to generate discussion topics and plan activities that engage members in meaningful conversations about mental well-being.
Beyond these meetings, the club takes part in larger initiatives within the community. For instance, they participated in the “Light Up Logansport” Parade in December to spread awareness about mental health. Additionally, they are organizing a suicide prevention walk this spring—a powerful event that not only honors those lost but also promotes awareness and action toward mental health support.
Supporting Students in Need
One of the most critical aspects of BC2M is providing a safe and open space for students who may be struggling with mental health issues. Adams emphasizes that the club serves as an emotional support network. “We give an open and safe space for students to address their emotions and encourage those to speak out when they see or hear something that doesn’t feel right to them.” BC2M helps students understand mental health’s effects so they can support their peers who might be suffering in silence.
The Student Perspective
For many students, BC2M has been a beacon of hope during difficult times. Kaitlyn Benner was motivated to join the club because of the heartbreak the school experienced last year. “The thing that motivated me to join the Bring Change to Mind club is the fact that last school year our school went through so much heartache.” While she has not yet seen a major shift in the school’s attitude toward mental health, she remains hopeful that BC2M will continue to grow and become a mainstay at Lewis Cass.
Nataly Lopez believes that while the school has improved its mental health resources in recent years, more can still be done. “I do think the school has gotten better about providing mental health resources in the past few years. After certain events happened that proved students needed to better their mental health, the school took action.” However, she notes that many students still struggle with seeking help, and BC2M serves as a valuable resource to educate and support them.
Breaking the Stigma
One of the biggest challenges BC2M faces is dismantling misconceptions about mental health. Adams highlights the stigma that surrounds mental health issues: “People think there must be something wrong with someone if they are struggling with their mental health, but that’s not the case. It should be treated just like you would go to the doctor if you are sick.”
Eliana Cicalo echoes this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of checking in on loved ones. “I wish more people understood that mental illness is not always an explicitly noticeable change in behavior. Everyone needs to check in on their friends and family often because a lot of times those who are struggling are able to mask their struggles and put on a fake smile in order to get through the day.”
Creating a More Supportive School Environment,
Students who are not directly involved in BC2M can contribute to a more understanding and supportive school culture. Cicalo advises students to be mindful of their peers. “The biggest way they can contribute to a more supportive school environment is by not being quick to judge other people. Everyone has their own problems going on, and those problems are only made worse by hearing people speculate about what’s going on in your life.”
Moving forward, BC2M members hope to see the club continue to grow and expand its reach. “Though this is the last year, I will be in the club, I hope that in the next few years, the club will continue to grow and that more mental health-centered events and initiatives can be implemented at Lewis Cass,” says Cicalo.
A Brighter Future for Mental Health Awareness
As BC2M continues to make a difference at Lewis Cass High School, its members remain committed to their mission of breaking the stigma and providing a safe space for students. The tragedies of the past year serve as a solemn reminder of the importance of mental health support in schools. Through initiatives like suicide prevention walks, peer support groups, and educational meetings, BC2M is paving the way for a more open and understanding school environment.
With the dedication of students, staff, and the broader community, BC2M is not just a club—it is a movement toward a future where mental health is prioritized and no student has to struggle alone.
