Investing in the next generation is important in developing new skills. On Saturday, March 15, the Lewis Cass Softball team held a clinic so the team could invest in the next generation of players who will eventually become the next Lady Kings. The all-day clinic included work on all aspects of the game doing drills, as well as playing a final game. The clinic was for girls ranging from 8 years old to 8th grade. Coaches and players worked all day teaching and helping with all the campers’ skills.
Senior varsity catcher, Hannah Zamora, was asked a few questions about the clinic she helped to put on. Zamora was asked if she thought the camp was exciting for younger girls to attend that the varsity team put on and used to invest in them. Hannah said yes, she thought the girls enjoyed getting to play and gain knowledge from the high school team. Zamora also said she hoped campers learned new things about the game they could take with them. Next, Hannah was asked what her favorite aspect of the clinic was. Zamora replied that it was when the varsity girls needed to fill some time, and she got an opportunity to play games with the campers. This helped campers release energy, and the girls were smiling and laughing the entire time. Hannah continued, that she hoped the clinic helped girls learn, grow, and eventually become future varsity players.
Senior varsity first baseman, Kaitlyn Benner, also helped with the clinic and was asked a few questions as well. Kaitlyn was asked how the campers who attended the clinic benefited from the camp. Benner replied saying she thought the clinic profited the girls a lot. The campers learned about the game throughout the day. Benner stated her favorite part of the clinic was when the campers played a game at the end of the day. The older girls split up from the younger ones and were divided into two teams. Kaitlyn said this was her favorite part because her team won with a score of 20-7. Benner thought the girls learned much about softball and improved throughout the camp.
Lewis Cass sixth grader, Ruby Eshelman, attended the camp and was asked a few questions from the camper’s view. Eshelman was asked one thing she thought helped her grow as a player. Ruby said she thought the wrist drop Coach Hubner taught her helped her with hitting. Next Ruby said she enjoyed learning from the varsity girls saying that they helped her by giving her many tips and words of encouragement which will assist her as a player. Finally, Ruby was asked what her favorite part of the clinic was. Elshelman replied that it was the game at the end of the clinic.
It is critical to invest in the younger generation, especially when the game one is investing in is a game of perfection. The Lewis Cass varsity softball team put on a tremendous clinic that benefited young players who attended in many ways. The future of Lewis Cass softball looks bright and will continue while current players are mentoring the next generation. Good luck to all ages in their upcoming seasons.
