With a new school year, Lewis Cass is lucky to be able to get some additions to our staff. One of these additions is the new Spanish teacher, Mrs Amor. Mrs. Amor is taking the place of Mrs. Mannering, who retired. Although it is sad to see Mrs. Mannering go, we are lucky to have a wonderful teacher like Mrs. Amor here at Lewis Cass.
First-day nerves happen to everyone, especially at the start of school. This is Mrs. Amor’s first year back to teaching after taking a break to be at home raising her kids. Which is why we wanted to know how it felt for her to be back teaching. She replied, “I’m excited (and a little overwhelmed) to be back in a classroom, but also a little sad because that means my babies are growing up!” When a person stops doing something they used to do on a daily basis they tend to lose their groove. Having trouble getting back into the groove can be challenging. When asked what adjustments Mrs Amor had to make to get back into her routine of teaching, she replied, “Well, I had to stop wearing sweatpants every day. I’m still making adjustments, but really just trying to get everything done for teaching, along with still being a mom and doing all the things that need to be done at home, too.”
Learning a new language can be fun and challenging. Teaching students tends to be even harder. Mrs. Amor was asked what made her want to teach Spanish. She stated, “I wanted to teach Spanish because it’s a fun language, and I get to do fun activities in class with my students. It’s almost like teaching elementary but with older students.” When asked if she had traveled to Spain or Mexico. She replied, “ Yep! I’ve been to Mexico. I studied in Spain for a semester in college. I’ve also taken groups of students to Costa Rica several times.”
Starting at a new school is always nerve-racking, especially when seeing new faces. Mrs. Karmel had this to say about her new partner across the hall, “Although I will miss Señora Mannering intensely, I am excited to work with Mrs. Amor this year and in the future.” Mrs. Karmel had this to say about the upcoming year in Spanish, “Well, everyone will be excited for the fiestas this year!” Mrs. Karmel is also known for taking her students on all types of field trips throughout the year. When asked about field trips, she is particularly excited about this year, Karmel replied, “Hopefully the Indy International festival, the Kriskindlemart, Live United Day, and some art in Chicago!”
Everyone is excited to have Mrs Amor working at the school this school year. The students and staff hope she will be here for years to come. It is safe to say that with these two teachers (along with all the others), Lewis Cass will have an amazing year!
