“Love that Chicken from Popeyes.” We all know this famous slogan, but do we all love the chicken from Popeyes? Well, I put it to the test. Logansport just opened a new Popeyes on Saturday, August 18, and there are many tasty opinions on it.
On their menu, Popeyes offers a variety of different chicken options, including chicken tenders, chicken sandwiches, wings, and even seafood, which I was surprised to see. At the moment, according to the Popeyes website, they offer limited-time menu items such as their chicken wraps and their ghost pepper chicken sandwich.
Last week, looking out my Jeep window, I saw a lengthy line of cars filing around the drive-through window, and wondered what the hype was around Popeyes. I knew I needed more than my opinion to put it to the test, so I asked a few of my schoolmates for their opinions about the new Popeyes in Logan. Dylan Panmei, a seventh grader at Lewis Cass, voiced a strong opinion on the matter. Dylan tried the chicken leg, Cajun fries, biscuit, and signature hot wings. He said the chicken leg was crispy, but the fries were not, and the biscuit was buttery, but dry. His favorite was the signature hot wings, which he said were “crispy and had a good kick to them and had the best flavor out of all the items.” When asked if he would go back to Popeyes again, Dylan said, “Yes, I would definitely go here again.”
Next, senior Alivya Strong reviewed the new Popeyes in Logansport. She tried the chicken tenders and said they were pretty crunchy and rated them a 7/10. She said the biscuit was a little dry and rated it a 6/10. When asked if she was glad we got a Popeyes in Logansport, she answered, “Yes, I am glad we got one in Logansport.” However, when I asked if it was better than Canes or Chick-fil-a, she replied, “No, it is not better than Canes or Chick-fil-a.
Afterwards, having never tried Popeyes, I knew I needed to try it for myself. I waited in the drive-through line, anticipating it would be faster than dining in. I was greatly surprised that it took less time than I had imagined, about ten minutes, to get my food. I ordered the three–piece chicken tender combo meal. After leaving, I realized they forgot my drink. Are we surprised? That is what I get for ordering from the drive-through. Putting that setback aside, I dug into the famous Cajun fries. They were covered in Cajun seasoning and had a nice crunch to them. I would compare them to Rally’s fries. I rate those an 8/10; they were the best thing I reviewed. Next, I tried the chicken tenders. The first bite was very crunchy; it reminded me of when you bite into Frosted Flakes cereal. I loved the texture of them, but the taste, not so much. They were very juicy but were bland and lacked the flavor you think of when you think of a delicious chicken tender. I rate the chicken strips a 6/10. Finally, I went to try the biscuit. Before trying it, I had known that the biscuit is famous online for being as dry as the Sahara desert, and I had to see if the stereotype was true. As I reached into the bag, shuffling my hand around, I realized they had not given me any butter, honey, or jam for my biscuit. I did not realize you had to ask for any condiments for your biscuit at the drive-through window. I would have expected, at the very least, to have been given some butter because who wants to eat a dry biscuit? That may have been my fault for not realizing, so I will not hold that against them in my review. I tore off a little piece from the corner of the biscuit and took a nibble. As expected, it was dry and bland; I would rate the dry biscuit a 3/10. I will have to try it with butter and jam another time.
Overall, I rated my Popeyes experience a 7/10, but since they forgot my Coke, I rate it a 6/10. I am happy to see the city of Logansport developing into a lively city. Logansport is improving by developing more restaurants and stores that will make Logansport more interesting to hang out in. The local residents are happy we got a Popeyes in Logansport. For me, however, I wish it would have been a Chick-Fil-A.
