The answer is….(pause for dramatic effect) Labubus. That is right, the hot, highly grossing, collectible creature has hit the tops of the sales charts and our For You Pages. But I know many of us are asking the same questions. What is it? Where are they from? When can I get my hands on one? By the end of this article, you will know all the who, what, when, wheres, and whys that Labubus has to offer.
What the heck are these things?
First things first, if you are not like the millions of people who are caught up in the Labubu lore, you are probably wondering the same things many others are. What the heck are these things? In short, it is a collectible doll that originated in Hong Kong in 2019 and has rapidly made its way throughout the world. Millions of people have found love for these adorably creepy creatures. Described as mischievous monsters, they have captured the hearts of millions. Their large eyes and even more disturbing toothy grins are what set them apart from other figurines. Followed by a fluffy and colorful exterior, these little guys are sure to win everyone over. But, many find themselves more creeped out rather than besotted with. Another factor that makes these creatures so engrossing is their owner’s ability to gamble with them. Labubus are able to be purchased at random, and consumers will not know what they will get until opening the box and having their Labubu in their hands. The blind box factor is what makes shoppers keep repurchasing. The desire to obtain a certain monster or color is what the craze is all about.
Where did they come from?
These newly discovered creatures are, in fact, not that new at all. They were first created when a Hong Kong artist, Kasing Lung, made a picture book series in 2015 named The Monsters that featured the furry friends. According to NPR.org, the series features a tribe of whimsical, magical characters who, despite good intentions, often cause playful chaos. The books include characters such as the well-known Labubu, followed by Zimomo, Spooky, and Tycoco. It was in 2019 when the toy company Pop Mart created the collectable figurines. But, it was not until April 2024 that the monsters rose to popularity after a famous K-Pop singer from Blackpink was spotted with one. From there, they took the internet by storm and flooded Pop Mark’s website.
Where can I find them?
If you have found yourself to be a Labubu lover, you would probably like to know where you can get one of your own. The most common retailer of the creature is Pop Mark, where the creatures originated from. But, there are several other places that you can purchase them, such as Amazon, Stock X, and Kicks Crew. The average doll can range from $20-$30, but that is not where it stops. Actually, there was a Labubu doll that sold for $170,000 according to Prestige.com. That tells you just how insane this craze is. But, be careful when buying your new furry friends. Do not catch yourself purchasing a fake Labubu or also known as a Lafufu. To know that you are not getting scammed, look out for these key details. A more well-known aspect of the doll is its smile, but a true Labubu has nine teeth. Not eleven, not seven, nine teeth. Another dead giveaway is the Pop Mark marking on the bottom of their feet. Finally, there is also one for sure way to know you do not have a Lafufu. If you scan the anti-counterfeit code on the box or doll and it takes you to the Pop Mark website, then you are sure to have the real deal.
There you have it, the Labubu run-down. You can now consider yourself a Labubu aficionado. You know the ins and outs of these collectible creatures. So, whether you are even more interested in them now or slightly disturbed, I hope you found this entertaining and informative, and I challenge you to collect them all.
