Whether you are on a long road trip, stuck in a car, or hanging out with friends on the weekend, nothing sounds better than a sweet treat, and one of the best desserts is a classic cookie. Luckily, many cities within an hour radius of Walton will have that sweet dessert you are looking for whether you prefer chocolate chip, snickerdoodle, or another enticing flavor. Some of the most popular cookie places in Indiana are Crumbl Cookies and Insomnia Cookies, but which store should you choose?
To find out which cookie place truly takes the cake, I purchased three flavors from both Crumbl and Insomnia. The flavors chosen were a classic chocolate chip cookie, a confetti-style cookie, and a brownie cookie from Crumble and a true brownie from Insomnia.
Before tasting each cookie and deciding a winner, it is important to know a little background about each cookie place and how its establishment works. Starting off with Crumbl Cookies, they were founded in 2017 when “co-founders Jason McGowan and Sawyer Hemsley teamed up on a quest to make the perfect chocolate chip cookie.” Their overall goal was to try to bring people together by having them share a box of the “best cookies in the world.” Crumble Cookies offers a wide variety of flavors as they have a weekly rotating menu to showcase six different flavors weekly, while having a staple chocolate chip cookie always on the menu (Crumbl Cookies).
Insomnia Cookies was founded in 2003, with the first official store opening in 2006, and has spread throughout the United States ever since. It all started when a group of college students was up late studying and were all craving a sweet treat to fulfill their “late-night cravings.” Since the start of their company, the company has only grown and developed and are continuing to make new cookies today. Most of their menu stays the same throughout the year, but they do have some rotating flavors based on the season (Insomnia Cookies).
Now, onto the comparison taste tests. The first cookie we started with was a confetti-style cookie from each location. Sophomores Madelyn Hillis and Brecken Smith tried each style of cookie and gave their honest reviews of each one. Madelyn preferred the Insomnia version of the confetti cookie as she said, “It tasted like my childhood.” On the other hand, Brecken enjoyed the Crumbl version more because the icing added extra sweetness and flavor. I personally agreed with Madelyn on this cookie because the Crumbl one was too sweet for my liking. Overall, the Insomnia confetti cookie was the winner for this category.
The second cookie that was tried from both places was a brownie-inspired cookie. Brecken tried both and said he prefers the Insomnia version because it was softer, richer, and had a better flavor profile overall. I thought the Insomnia cookie was not totally done, thus it was not enjoyable, and I preferred the richness of the Crumbl cookie, as did Madelyn Hillis. The brownie cookie from Crumbl was victorious in this trial. Finally, on to the last round.
The last cookie to be tested was the classic chocolate chip cookie that put these businesses on the map. Madelyn, Brecken, and I all preferred the Crumbl cookie because of the sweetness of the milk chocolate and the softness of the cookie when you eat it. The insomnia cookie had more dark chocolate, making it a little more bitter and not as enjoyable. Crumbl won the final round, proving its chocolate chip cookie will always come out on top.
After many trials and many cookies eaten, Crumbl was the overall champion, winning two out of three rounds and proving that it was the better cookie company overall. If you are wanting to purchase cookies from either of these locations, you can find them nearby in Lafayette, Indiana, only a short 45-minute drive away! Both places had amazing options, and I would recommend both of these to everyone!
