On September 10, 2025, 911 dispatch received numerous calls from Evergreen High School, located in Evergreen, Colorado, just outside of Denver. The first call was received at 12:24 pm, and the police officers arrived at the high school quickly. According to Jefferson County Colorado News, Fox News’ reporter, Pilar Arias, and ABC News’ reporters, Forrester, Stone, and Moore, the shooter, 16-year-old Desmound Holly, shot one student in the high school and the other student outside of the school. When officers found Holly, he shot himself, ending the horrific events that day.
According to NBC News reporter, Dennis Romero, one of the victims remains hospitalized in critical condition, while the other victim was released from the hospital. Several witnesses testified about events that occurred that day and how much of a “shock” and “tragedy” it was. However, this is not the only school that has been targeted by gun violence. Gun violence across the U.S. has increased in the past year alone. Gun violence is not only occurring in schools but also in stores, train stations, and many places that are intended to be safe environments. A study conducted by the Pew Research Center, written by John Gramlich, states that in 2025, homicide accounted for up to 38% of all gun violence-related deaths, and suicide accounted for 58%.
According to the Gun Violence Archive, there have been “10,783 deaths and 19,705 injuries related to gun violence in 2025 alone. 2,833 of the deaths/injuries were teens ages 12-17, and 556 were children ages 11 and under.” Gun violence has gotten out of control, affecting people across, not only, the United States, but the entire world. This worldwide problem has led many different organizations to help prevent it. One of those organizations is the Prevention Institution.
The Prevention Institution’s goal is “to ensure that the places where all people live, work, play, and learn foster health, safety, and well being.”To ensure their goal, this organization has, “Since 1997, partnered with communities, local government entities, foundations, multiple sectors, and public health agencies to bring cutting-edge research, practice, strategy, and analysis to the pressing health and safety concerns of the day. We have applied our approach to injury and violence prevention, among other issues.” The organization tries its best to prevent suffering. On the website, it is stated that the reason they take pride in their organization is “It reduces needless suffering and saves lives. Time and again, prevention efforts have been proven to work.” This organization is just one of the many out there to prevent violence, of any kind, so that people can live their lives to the fullest without the fear of danger or death.
