Fall has officially begun, which means the temperatures cool down, right? Wrong! This year, temperatures in October feel like we are still in the dead of summer. Because of this, our favorite fall-time apparel is still waiting patiently in our closets to finally be worn again. Although, according to this year’s fashion trends, maybe we should be leaving these clothes in the closet and hopping on the latest looks and styles.
According to Zoe Amora Iranzo of Gen Z Fashion, teenagers today have taken over the fashion world by bringing back some classic looks from the early 2000s. Instead of copying that decade exactly, teens have brought back some staple pieces like low-rise jeans, cargo pants, and, surprisingly enough, butterfly clips. Taking that into account, this fall the set trend seems to be relaxed but structured. Leaning more towards the female side, the most basic route to achieve this refreshed Y2K style is with oversized bottoms like stylish wide-leg sweatpants or baggy jeans paired with a tighter-fitting shirt, either by itself or with a jacket (Amora Iranzo). Similarly, Louis Cheslaw of GQ said the look for men this fall is streetwear. A basic pair of pants like cargos or baggy jeans matched with a plain crew neck or long sleeve, while incorporating fall colors like dark reds and oranges, and off white and cream (Cheslaw).
To get more creative this fall, the more patterns, textures, and colors, the better. This year, teens have successfully brought back animal print. People wear animal print with anything; mixing and matching fun styles like a printed skirt with a simple black shirt and leather jacket to dress it up. Other patterns like stripes and polka dots are in now as well.
To elevate any outfit, the accessories are key and definitely needed. For boys, simple watches or belts will improve the look instantly. For girls, there is never enough jewelry. From chunky to thin, all jewelry is in. Stacking jewelry, combining thin with thick pieces, and even mixing different metals will pull any outfit together. To go even further, try a different hairstyle and experiment using claw clips, headbands, bows, or other types of clips.
Lastly, shoes have become a staple this year, and brands like New Balance, Nike, Birkenstock, and especially Adidas have made the must-have list. All models of Adidas, like Sambas, Campuses, and Gazelles in different colors, as well as platform and regular, have been among the top purchased shoes of the year, according to Krstina Rutkowski from Vogue. Other than sneakers, a pair of shoes to slide on and off is the Birkenstock Boston Clog. This shoe was widely known on social media as the “ugly shoe,” but then gained popularity from that and is now the top-selling shoe by both genders, said Alice Newbold from Vogue. These are perfect fall shoes because of how versatile they can be. These shoes can be worn with jeans and sweatpants, or even dressed up with a skirt and sweater combination.
Fall is coming… slowly but surely this year, which means everyone has a little extra time to get their own fall style perfected before the weather changes. These trends have been around for about a year, and they should be here to stay for some time. This year is about expressing yourself and wearing what makes you feel most confident. My advice is to do exactly that, and I wish everyone a fashionable fall!
