Cass Gets Blown Away by Winamac in 4th Quarter

Saturday night’s intense wind blew in Winamac who gave the Lady Kings their first loss of the season. The game could only be described as a barnburner up until the fourth quarter when Winamac rolled past Cass, who couldn’t comeback in time to win the game.

The first quarter went to Cass, who was up 11 to 7 at the conclusion. Olivia Collins scored the first points with a three pointer at the 4:35 mark, and she led the quarter with ten of Cass’s eleven points. Ashton McClain had the single point off a free throw to add to the total. By the end of the first quarter, Cass had four team fouls compared to Winamac’s two team fouls.

Winamac’s Stephanie Shorter had the first points of the second quarter. Savanna Thompson scored the first point of the quarter for Cass at the free throw line, but only going 1 for 2. The second quarter turned out to be Maci Maupin’s breakout quarter. Maupin scored her first basket at the 4:29 mark and had a beautiful mid-air steal down at Winamac’s basket. On the return down the floor, Maupin was fouled and made one of her free throws. With 1:57 remaining in the quarter, Olivia Collins made a two point shot that tied the game at 17-17. At the end of the first half, Cass was up 21-19. Cass had nine team fouls. Winamac had six team fouls.

Both teams started the third quarter with a dry spell that lasted three minutes until Maupin landed a two-pointer from the top of the key. While Haley Johnson may not have scored much, she sure did add to the fouls in the third quarter with two personals, which landed her in foul trouble with four. A pass intercepted by Thompson late in the quarter led to a basket for Cass. The basket wasn’t enough to put them ahead at the end of the third quarter but it was enough to tie the score at 28-28 to end the third.

The start of the fourth quarter was strong for the Lady Kings with Maupin landing a three not even ten seconds into the quarter. Unfortunately, the fourth quarter was also kind to the Lady Warriors who went on a fifteen point run. Foul trouble caught up yet again with the Lady Kings, Thompson earned her fourth foul early in the quarter and then fouled out late in the game with three points. The Lady Kings had a chance to come back when it was tied up with 5:10 left to play, but Winamac hit the gas pedal and never let up.

Though the final score, 34-43, wasn’t the highlight of Cass’s night, the highlights of Cass’s night were top scorers senior Maci Maupin and freshman Olivia Collins. Maupin had a total of 11 points and four fouls while Collins added 14 points and 2 fouls.  A combined total of team fouls was rather high for Cass with nineteen fouls compared to Winamac’s measly twelve team fouls.

Hopefully Cass can redeem themselves from this home loss with a home win over Eastern, who they host next Saturday.
