Spending the day in the woods

This weekend I went hunting. I woke up on a cold morning at around 6 a.m. When I woke up, I went straight toward the garage to put on my hunting clothes. I was freezing as I stepped into the garage, but I made haste and put on my clothes. I then grabbed my 12.gauge and some slugs and walked outside where I waited for my dad’s friend, Aaron, to pick me up. When Aaron did  pick me up, I hopped inside is truck and we drove off to our deer stands. Aaron helped me find my way through the darkness to my stand. He told me to be ready just in case one came by. When he left, all was quiet and still. The pure silence was frightening in the darkness where I found it hard to see.

As the morning sun began to rise, I could see a little more every minute as if the sun was slowly coming closer to me. I was alert as I scanned every inch of the woods for a deer. The cold air in the woods was all around me cooling my body. I was trying to keep warm but it got harder every minute. I manned up and just sat there taunting the cold air. I scanned the woods harder this time looking at every little detail. The squirrels were jumping, and the leaves were rustling. Alas, no deer were around and I found it hard to contain a sort of irritant bugging my mind. At around this time, everything was visible and light was shining. I began to question if a deer would ever cross my path today. Then I heard gunshots, lots of gunshots.

I assumed they were from my dad who wasn’t too far away. I texted him to find out, but he replied no. He said it was about time to go home and I replied ok. I climbed out of my tree stand and walked back to my dad’s truck with a numb feeling of disappointment and coldness. I was mad that I didn’t even see a single deer. I usually see deer about every time I go out but that day was not my day. I brushed this unforgiving day off and was happy to be inside a warm truck! I told myself it was ok and I’ll kill one next time I am out hunting.
