Borg Vs McEnroe

Borg Vs McEnroe

The date is July 5th, 1980 London, England. The championship match of Wimbledon, a day that will change tennis forever. This match was the famous Björn Borg vs John McEnroe match that will go down in history for being one of the greatest tennis matches ever played. The Borg and McEnroe rivalry goes back to the central point in time. The perfect example of fire and ice. Borg the machine and unemotional tennis player and Mcenroe the very emotional and heated competitor. This is still remembered today due to the quality of play and the players on the court. Due to this, there has been a film made over this great rivalry named Borg Vs McEnroe. So as the tennis enthusiast as I am I decided this weekend to sit down and watch it.

Going into the movie I was unsure of how good it was going to be. I already knew the result of the match by previous knowledge and watching most of the match just in my free time. Therefore, I came into the movie wanting the best for it because I’m a tennis fan and wanted to learn more about Björn Borg. I have watched Mcenroe play and have learned about his great career and insane personality but I wanted to learn more about the multiple time Wimbledon champ Björn Borg. I was very impressed, for an understatement, and had a great time watching this epic film.

Shia LaBeouf as John McEnroe and Sverrir Gudnason as Björn Borg did their roles amazingly. The two of these men portray themselves as the actual tennis icons. Gudnason looked extremely on point as Borg with the hair, and personality. Love him or hate him, John McEnroe changed the game of tennis and LaBeouf showed off McEnroe the person. McEnroe, a hothead from New York and the mentality of a complete winner was on full display with the performance from LaBeouf. Even though Borg was the fan-favorite I was always in the corner for McEnroe. I feel like this is my American pride or just being a bigger fan of McEnroe than Borg.

The Movie tells the story of the 1980 Wimbledon tournament from the eyes of Borg and McEnroe. At this time Borg was a four-time Wimbledon Champion and was looking for his fifth in a row and all the pressure in the world was on Borg. This has never been done before and Sverrir Gudnason acted like how Borg had to be feeling. Stressed, is the word I would use. Borg was trying to make history but this young 21-year-old stud was trying to dethrone the King. This movie is more Borg so most of the content is on him. I hoped it was 50 50 but I couldn’t complain because the film was excellent.

I enjoyed Borg Vs McEnroe and I recommend this to any tennis fan on the planet. I recommend this to any sports fan in general because of the story and rivalry these two fierce competitors had for each other. Borg vs Mcenroe is rated R due to the fact that McEnroe doesn’t have the best vocabulary and is prone to saying a couple of cuss words in there. You can find this excellent piece of cinema on Hulu. I hope you guys enjoy it!
