Self-Help: Dealing with coworkers

Everyone one day will work no matter if it is in an office or a warehouse, now or later in life. Wherever that may be, one may work all alone by himself, maybe with enough luck you will have an assistant, but most jobs that students can get have coworkers. That is one of the major flaws in that thing people call a job; it is kind of like high school.

Though like high school there are many solutions to problems such as this. The hardest yet easiest is to leave them be, ignore the life out of them. If your coworker has annoying habits, just ignore them. This solution is so very degrading. That is why it is the hardest; ask any high schooler who has ever been bullied. But if you can keep cool and not “flip out,” eventually they should leave you alone.

Another way you can deal with an annoying coworker is to tell him/her off. This solution is not for the kind hearted; sometimes you have to use tact to make your job a little easier. Your co worker may not even know they are being annoying to you and in a lot of cases if you tell them what they are doing, they might make an effort to stop doing it.

Recently, I had the same problem with one of my co workers and I tried both of these solutions. In this case it just didn’t work but in a lot of others those could absolutely work. This coworker of mine was just downright rude; I could not stand him. I ignored him for months and I finally could not ignore him anymore so I told him off.  I told him off and this coworker was so hard headed and didn’t see that what he was doing was wrong. I finally had to blow off some steam and talked to another fellow coworker and he let me (which was awesome!). He told me to go and talk to the manager about it. This turned out to be the best thing for this situation. All I did was ask to speak with the manager and she listened and asked questions. I told her how I was being treated and how he was treating everyone and she said that she would speak with him.

There are solutions to even the worst of problems. These solutions are not the only ones available but the ones that seem to get the job done. If you have any further ideas about how to deal with an unruly co worker please, feel free to leave a comment. There are no wrong answers except let’s keep the ones that may cause a lawsuit out of the comments.
