Lewis Cass is in sectional thirty-four. Our sectional is made up of seven teams: Seeger, Delphi, LCC (Lafayette Central Catholic), Benton Central, Winamac, Rochester, and us, Lewis Cass. Coming into this year’s sectional, these teams have a combined record of 26-28. Now, in week eleven, the only teams left are Lewis Cass, Seeger, LCC, and Rochester.
Central Catholic and Winamac were at the top of the bracket. They played in Lafayette where the heavily favored home team came out on top with a score of Winamac 14, LCC 42. Lafayette Central Catholic is ranked #8 in class 2A which is the second highest rank of any team in this sectional only to Rochester who is #4, according to John Harrell’s Sagarin ratings. Those teams alone have a combined record of 13-5. LCC and Rochester play each other this Friday in Lafayette.
At the bottom of the bracket, Lewis Cass played a fairly even-matched Delphi this past Friday. Cass was struggling in the first half but still managed to have a 6-0 lead at halftime. The Kings came out very strong in the third quarter and a dominant fourth to pull out a score of 34-14. This week the strong, senior lead Lewis Cass plays a very equivalent opponent in Seeger. Although the teams have never played before, they are very evenly matched. Both teams have similar touchdowns per game and yards per game so it is shaping up to be quite an exciting late-October Friday.
We have not played LCC and Rochester much in recent years, but we played LCC in last year’s sectional where Central Catholic came out on top after a chilly, hard-fought game by both teams. The Knights’ passing game proved to be too much for the Kings defensively although they were held to few yards through the air at the half according to Maxpreps.com. The score after two quarters was 20-13, favoring LCC.
Coming out of halftime, both the Kings and Knights scored fourteen points in the third quarter making the score 34-27. It was the fourth and final quarter, however, that really lopsided the scoreboard when LCC scored fourteen points and Cass scored zero. Lafayette had a strong and large senior class last year and has graduated many key players, so if the Kings play them in the sectional championship, it should shape up to be a good game.
The Rochester Zebras are a very solid team this year on both sides of the ball, but especially defensively. They are giving up an average of ten points per game which is more than ideal. Cass and Rochester met in week five of this season where Rochester dominated the line of scrimmage and put up 345 rushing yards. The final score was 6-44, Rochester. Granted Rochester is a good team, but this game was one of the most poorly played games all season by the Kings, so if they find each other in the championship game it should be entertaining.
