All over the state, many schools are transferring from grass fields to turf fields. Our school has yet to do that, but unlike those other schools, we have recently gotten a new home basketball court. Through much of our school’s history, our court has had the same design but has been re-finished every few years or so. However, with a mishap in a previous re-finishing on the prior court, the coating layer started to wear down and peel off in many spots. When interviewed, Athletic Director, Mr. Greg Marschand said, “Long story short… a company responsible for the product placed on the coating of the floor supplied a wrong mix of which caused the floor coating to flake and peel off resulting in the floor having to be sanded down completely and resurfaced.” This new court floor is in pristine condition and many athletes are ready to go to work on the new floor.
This new court was not a one-man idea and creation, yet it took a group of people (consisting of athletic coaches and the school’s physical education department) to all come up with designs and patterns for the floor. After all, it will be their students and athletes who will be using the court during their classes or seasonal sports. Mr. Marschand added, “The professional artist-designer with Four Star Floor Company took suggestions from our athletic coaches and the PE department. He did an EXCEPTIONAL JOB to design what was best for Cass.” The company responsible for designing our floor, Four Star Floor Company, is based in Lapel, Indiana. Four Star Floor Company has recently resurfaced basketball courts at the following high schools: Logansport, Cathedral, Hagerstown, Westfield, Lincoln, Lakewood Park, Yorktown, and Frankton. They have also resurfaced the basketball court floors at various Boys and Girls Clubs around the state. Mr. Marschand also said, “The professional designer with Four Star took everyone’s suggestions and laid out a plan to meet the needs of everyone and designed what was best for Cass.” He also stated, “Our floor was one of his favorites.” However, unlike most courts with a shiny and polished finish, our court has a matte finish, which separates it from most.
Among this new basketball court, our girls’ basketball team will be one of the first teams to use it. The girls’ basketball team looks to have another successful season. The Head coach of the girls’ basketball team, Kyle Amor, was asked about his opinions on the court and said, “Anything “new” can be scary. People like traditions and keeping things the same. I’ll be honest, the blue inside the three-point line was not my first choice, but I am super impressed with how it turned out. The crown inside the lane is a nice touch as well. As you look around the state, there are a ton of unique basketball courts. Our regional site at Belmont had a floor similar to this. I think our floor looks great. I’ve walked on it. It feels great. I’m excited for our first game on the new floor.” Former girls basketball regional championship of the 2023-2024 season team member, junior, Anna Hedrick said, “I think the new court is a great addition to the school, and I like how different it looks from the prior court design, and I like how the court doesn’t have a glare since it has a matte finish.”
The boys’ basketball team is also eager to play on the new court. Boys’ basketball coach, Eric Branz, shared his thoughts on the new court, and he said, “I am pleased with the new court design. I think it was a great update that brings life to the gym. If you look at the trend of gym floors from high schools through the NBA you are seeing a lot of the same updates we have made.”
Although our court may be different and stand out from others, many people at the school like the new court and are eager to use it. Swing by the main gym and take a look at the new floor design to get your thoughts about the court. Let’s go Kings!
