After a long winter season, spring will be here sooner than we know! The time also changes on Sunday. As time changes, the human body needs rest. Farmersalmanac.com said, “Even though we know that after December 21, the days start getting steadily longer, we still see more darkness than light over the course of a day in those three months leading up to spring. The vernal equinox marks the turning point when daylight begins to win out over darkness.” Farmers Almanac.com continued saying the first day of spring always changes because, “A year is not an even number of days and neither are the seasons, and because Earth’s elliptical orbit is changing its orientation.” Because of the nights getting shorter, and having to turn our clocks forward, it is important to get the right amount of sleep. Sleep plays a big role in a teen’s life because of school. Teens have to wake up early, and losing that sleep can affect us by making it hard for us to stay awake during school.
Mental health also plays a big role in time change and season changes. With spring coming up, the sun will be out, more plans and activities will be done. The weather will be nice and the leaves will finally turn green. The Kim Foundation.org’s Sadie Hinkel said, “For some people, the changes that Springtime brings can cause increased feelings of anxiety and depression. While most people assume that Seasonal Affective Disorder occurs only in the winter months, SAD can occur during a change in any season, including Spring.” It is hard to believe springtime can still cause anxiety and depression, but it is completely normal. Hinkel said, “Any change can be anxiety-inducing, even a change in the weather. Other reasons people may be affected by the Springtime blues include an increase in allergy symptoms and expectations.” It is important to keep yourself as healthy as possible during the seasonal changes. There are tips for anyone that is feeling down or sick, including allowing yourself to experience the full range of your emotions, make time for self-care, get enough sleep, and create a routine. These tips are great for teens during this time because they can keep us more organized and less stressed.
Even though spring can be a happy and cheerful time for most people, there are still people that can experience the springtime blues. The time change can cause adults and teens to lose sleep and become moody through the day. With the weather getting warmer, more activities and plans will be made and done, so prioritizing sleep will be the key to a steady sleep schedule and less stressful days. Don’t forget to also prioritize your mental health as well as everyone else around you!
