Between the months of November to April, college basketball has a tight grip on fans across the nation. Each day, new matchups unfold, and contests take place. We are right in the thick of this intense time of competition, and the stakes are starting to rise. With the madness of March on the horizon, these games are becoming increasingly more important for each team. Here in the Midwest, our favorite teams compete in the Big Ten Conference. This season, the Big Ten has seen outstanding performances left and right from various schools and is looking forward to an intense conference tournament in a few weeks.
The Big Ten conference has six of its eighteen members ranked in the top 25, including the number one-ranked Wolverines of the University of Michigan. Michigan has had an exceptional season, only having one loss coming to them in a close one against the University of Wisconsin. In just Coach Dusty May’s (Indiana University Alumni) second year of coaching at Michigan, he has completely flipped the script of Wolverine basketball, giving Big Blue Nation a taste of the glory they once had. Last year, the team made a run to the Sweet Sixteen after not even making the tournament the year before. The Wolverines have picked up right where they left off last season. ESPN’s Jay Bilas stated, “The Wolverines have everything a team needs to win a National Championship. This squad has depth, size, shooting, and an intimidating interior defense rated the best in the nation.” These Wolverines are no joke and are not only the Big Ten Conference Tournament favorite, but also the front-runner for the National Championship as well.
The Fighting Illini of the University of Illinois are currently sitting as second-best in the conference and rank tenth nationally. This team is another one that has had a terrific season up to this point, with only a handful of losses to highly ranked opponents. Four-star, freshman point guard, Keaton Wagler has been a standout performer for Illinois this season, posting outstanding stats, including posting 46 points in a victory over Purdue University. This Illini squad has been shining all season and is looking to carry this performance right into the off-season.
Michigan State, the University of Nebraska and Purdue are next in line, all with records of 11-4 and rank in the top 25. Both Michigan State and Purdue are two historic programs that seem to regularly make tournament appearances and deep runs in March. It appears that this could be the case yet again this season. Both squads are home to veteran players and are sure to be a threat in the upcoming tournament.
Nebraska, on the other hand, is not a team that you normally expect to see in the Top 25 rankings. The Cornhuskers have had a tremendous season being undefeated until suffering a close defeat by Michigan in late January. Since that loss, Nebraska has dropped three more contests and seems to be headed on a downward slide. According to CBSSports.com’s David Cobb and Jacob Fetner, “As Selection Sunday creeps closer, the Cornhuskers are moving in the wrong direction within the CBS Sports Bracketology model. After Tuesday night’s 57-52 loss at Iowa, Nebraska has dropped four of its past six games and is now a No. 4 seed. [in the NCAA March Madness Tournament].” Nevertheless, Nebraska’s season has gone surprisingly well, and they are looking forward to a deep tournament run in March.
The teams previously mentioned may be the front-runners for a conference tournament title or even a national championship, but a few other squads around the conference have the potential to make some noise as well. The Badgers of Wisconsin have had some massive wins this season, defeating Michigan, Illinois, and Michigan State. Wisconsin has many experienced players and could be a major threat come March. The University of Iowa, Ohio State University, and the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) are all teams that are right on the brink of doing something big come tournament time. All three have had big wins thus far in the season and could become a dark horse in the upcoming conference tournament.
So far, this college basketball season in the Big Ten Conference has been nothing short of exciting. Dominant teams and underdog wins have been the story thus far, and there is so much more to come. The 2026 Big Ten Conference tournament will take place from March 11 to the 15 at the United Center in Chicago, Illinois. It is set to be an intense competition with must-watch matchups. Make sure to watch the end of this thrilling season unfold in the maddening month of March.
