With the month of March finally upon us, basketball season is coming to an end. This season has been jam-packed with all the excitement and thrills that come with the sport, such as dominating teams and numerous upset wins. The 2026-26 basketball season has been led by the league’s historically strong teams such as Duke University, University of Michigan, and the University of Connecticut (UCONN). These squads’ powerful players will look to continue their dominance in the highly anticipated National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) March Madness tournament that enthralls basketball fans everywhere. The madness of March is unlike any other, with countless Cinderella stories and busted brackets that make it one of the most entertaining sporting events of all time. The countdown to this terrific tournament is on, as the action begins in less than a week.
Selection Sunday took place this past weekend, and the bracket is officially set. All four regions are stacked with amazing talent and are sure to pose numerous intense matchups. The top overall seed in this year’s tournament belongs to none other than the Blue Devils from Duke University. Duke is home to one of the top blue-blood basketball programs in the country, and it is no surprise that they are at the top spot yet again. Led by freshman ACC Player of the Year, Cameron Boozer, the Blue Devils have had yet another phenomenal season, proving themselves to be a strong contender for the National title.
The three other top seeds in the bracket belong to the University of Arizona, Michigan, and the University of Florida. Like Duke, these squads have had incredible success this season and will all be difficult to compete with in this postseason play. The Michigan Wolverines have controlled the Big Ten Conference this season, becoming the Conference champions with only one loss during the regular season. Arizona has also been quite impressive this year, finishing at the top of the Big 12 Conference. According to Cbssports.com, Isaac Trotter, “Arizona’s 7-foot-2 center Motiejus Krivas is one of the best defensive players in college basketball, but Tommy Lloyd’s crew has big, strong, physical dudes all over the floor.” These Wildcats will pose a rather large threat to their opponents, both figuratively and physically. Rounding out the top seeds are the Gators of Florida. The defending National Champions have returned to the top and are looking to make a deep tournament run yet again.
Even though these top teams are expected to rule this year’s tournament, this event is infamous for its unpredictability and possible “dark horse” squads. The magic of March never disappoints and is sure to produce eye-catching, surprising results. Schools that could possibly go on these “storybook” runs, according to USA Today’s John Brice, are teams such as Arkansas, Miami, and Vanderbilt. All of these teams are ranked as rather low seeds and have the potential to do some damage to countless brackets. The Razorbacks of the University of Arkansas are home to numerous talented stars, and averaged over 90 points per game, a feat that only belonged to one other team this season (Miami of Ohio). The University of Miami (Florida) comes in as a seven seed and had the “largest year-over-year turnaround”. The Hurricanes have an 18-win improvement and are a probable team to have surprising success. Lastly, the Commodores of Vanderbilt University have many notable victories and have the ability to add to them this March. (Brice, 2026)
Overall, not much is certain heading into the mania of the NCAA tournament. Sports fans everywhere are in the midst of countless bracket predictions; however, with the anticipated Cinderella stories and upset victories ahead, this task is quite difficult. Nevertheless, one thing is for certain: this tournament will be full of madness. Make sure to join in the fun this Thursday, as the Round of 64 is set to begin. Let the dancing begin!
