For many young athletes, the dream of playing professional sports races through many of their goals and aspirations in life. As these athletes ascend the ranks through high school and collegiate athletics, the dream could soon become a reality with their play on and off the field. As these players finish their collegiate careers, the stars are given the opportunity to take their careers to the next level, declaring for their sport’s draft. Each professional sport executes its drafts differently, where fans can see week-long events and host cities accommodating large crowds of fans and players. The largest spectacle, however, has to be the National Football League (NFL) Draft, where next week the league’s newest rookies will be selected in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
The draft is headlined by former Indiana University Hoosier quarterback Fernando Mendoza, who is projected to head to the Las Vegas Raiders with its first overall pick. Mendoza’s stellar year for the Hoosiers jump-started him from a little-known prospect to the most coveted athlete in the 2026 Draft Class. While Mendoza did not throw at the NFL Draft Combine, he showcased his arm to Indiana’s deep wide receiver room, completing fifty-three of his fifty-six passes and beefed up to two hundred and thirty-six pounds, per ESPN. Mendoza’s professional attitude, intensity, and football IQ make Mendoza an ultimate candidate for the Raiders. Mendoza is also humble at heart, as he is choosing to privately celebrate his draft night, rather than make the event about himself, a decision becoming more common for quarterbacks projected to go number one overall, per ESPN. Overall, Mendoza’s influence is planned to be instant, as the Raiders will have veteran QB Kirk Cousins on the back burner to mentor Mendoza to glory.
Another recruit making a local impact is University of Notre Dame running back, Jeremiyah Love, who is coming off a Heisman-finalist season for the Fighting Irish. In history’s past, running backs were rarely picked high in the draft and usually fell to the late-first round and early second round, no matter their skill. Recently, however, modern offensive schemes have led to beefier running backs being chosen within the top ten picks, as stars like Bijon Robinson and Ashton Jeanty were both taken within the top ten within the three year-period from 2023 to 2025, per Michael Rothstein of ESPN. Jeremiyah had a successful combine, running a 4.36-second forty-yard dash, and helped himself become a projected top-five pick in the 2026 Draft.
Overall, this 2026 NFL Draft Class has a lot of potential to take reign over the league. While Mendoza and Love are some of the more prominent names in the field, the class offers studs in every position. With the modern landscape of college football, athletes are more prepared for professional ball and are making huge impacts on the game from the first snaps. So, as the sun sets down in the Pennsylvania foothills, the league’s next generation will be selected, and dreams will come true for these athletes. Who will make the right picks, and who will become the next great to graze the gridiron?
