Lady Kings Tennis Wins Sectional Title

The girls’ tennis team thought early on in the season that they could have a good chance in the sectional this year. They had hoped to take down Logansport, who had been a big sectional opponent in recent years, early in the season. During the regular season, they did exactly that by beating the Berries 5-0. The Kings were ready if they met them again in sectional play. Twin Lakes, another sectional opponent, beat the Kings 2-3 in regular season. The girls knew they had to avenge a loss to the Indians if they wanted to move on to Regionals. “A big thing was winning the Southwood tournament because we hadn’t beaten Bishop Luers, who’s always really good. So we beat them and I think that became a really big confidence booster coming into this.” The team came into Sectional with a record of 11-3 and some major confidence.

The Kings played Carroll on Wednesday of last week in the first round. Due to a rain delay, they had to finish the dual on Thursday and with their victory, the Kings turned right around and played Logansport the same night. The Kings beat the berries 4-1 to secure a spot in the sectional championship against Twin Lakes. The team knew it would be a tough match against the Indians and they would have to fight for the trophy. Earlier in the season, the Kings had lost to this same team but had a different line up due to illness. Now with a full team back and ready to go, Cass hoped to snag one more win to claim a sectional victory. The Kings came out on top with a 4-1 win over Twin Lakes. The Indians got their lone point at No. 1 singles against Cass’ Ivette Prado, 3-6, 6-7. At No. 2 Singles, Bailey Gremelspacher came out victorious with a 6-3, 6-3 win. Joy Mateo at No. 3 singles also won with a score of 6-3, 6-0. The doubles teams dominated grabbing two of Cass’ four points on the night. The Kings’ No. 1 doubles team of Khyla Wilson and Sabrina Morgan defeated their opponent 6-0, 6-0. Ali Hartley and Katie Lane came out with a 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 2 doubles.

The Kings took home the sectional title with a total domination of all three teams. The Kings were very senior heavy this year. They will lose five seniors on the varsity squad. Before saying goodbye to those girls though, they will have to fight for another title in Regionals. The Kings play Harrison in the first round of Regionals on Tuesday. They will move on to the championship on Wednesday if they come out victorious.
