An Eye-Opening Game

Something about the last regular game of the volleyball season really opened up my eyes. Nothing major occurred that night, but I will remember it forever. The senior volleyball players we have this year have been incredible leaders and have been encouraging to us underclassmen.  Improving my skills this year couldn’t have been done with the help of the seniors. Playing volleyball without them won’t be the same next year, so Lewis Cass Senior Night will be a special memory that I will never forget.

Senior night for volleyball was an emotional night for all the volleyball players. Playing to the best of our abilities was crucial in order to end the season with a victory. The night had hit the seniors hard. They would never play another volleyball game on the Lewis Cass volleyball court.

Starting off strong against Hamilton Heights was the start to a well-played volleyball game. The crowd was fired up and kept cheering us on no matter the mistake we players made. We rarely broke focus, and if we did, it was only for a second. Glancing at the crowd for a split second, I saw the proud looks on the faces of our parents. The encouraging shouts from the fans gave me the sudden drive to play the best that I could.

That night wasn’t about us underclassmen. Senior night is the one game that gives recognition to our senior volleyball players. This year has been a successful one for all three of them. Kassi Zeck was always where she needed to be on the court and never let a ball drop. She had more digs than the whole team combined and had a hustle like no other person. Gabi Hartley was the leader of the whole team. She reminded the coach of things that needed to be done and knew each position better than anyone. Claire Crum was definitely the most enthusiastic. She easily shook off her mistakes and was always encouraging when the other players made theirs.

Senior Night was pretty much like any other volleyball game. We had a supportive crowd, supportive coaches, and we played our hearts out. Realizing this was the last game that the team will ever play together on our home court really opened up my eyes. We all hear, “These are the best years of your life,” but I never really thought much about it. Time really does fly. The years continue to move faster as I get older. Using the time to practice and improve my skills is crucial. One day I will be the senior on the court, and I will be playing my last volleyball game ever.
