Imagine being a regular school teacher and then one day getting asked to save the world. The newly released movie Project Hail Mary is breaking records for Amazon MGM because of its early success. The movie has been out for about a month and is already grossing over $515 million, making it the highest-grossing film for Amazon MGM (Ben Fritz of The Wall Street Journal). A controversial topic about Project Hail Mary is which is better: the book or the movie. From the pages of the book to the big screen in theaters, there are so many memorable scenes that will leave an impact, whether you watch or read it.
This Sci-Fi story is about a high school science teacher, Ryland Grace, who gets recruited to figure out why microscopic organisms are dimming the sun and is forced to travel to space to ultimately save the world. During Grace’s mission to the Tau Ceti solar system to find a solution, he was sent up in an induced coma, and once he woke up, he was faced with many challenges. One challenge was that the other two astronauts who traveled with him had passed away. Another obstacle is that this mission is a one-way trip, so once Grace completed the mission, he had to send the information and data back in four small probes. Throughout this journey, a new character is introduced named Rocky. Rocky explains that the same phenomenon is happening to his planet as well, and both Ryland and Rocky continue their missions together to save both planets.
Although the movie has just been released, the novel Project Hail Mary was published in 2021. The comparison of the novel and the film has gotten similar feedback from most fans. Lewis Cass senior, Braylee Peirce has both watched the movie and read the book, and she said, “The book is, in my opinion, better than the movie for the sole reason that it includes more details and we get to learn more about the science behind everything!” She also explained she would recommend both to everyone, though, and mentions that the movie is a great adaptation of the book. Matthew Razak from Space.com claims that the movie focused more on the character development of Ryland Grace and the relationship between Rocky and Grace as well. Likely the most significant difference between the two is the amount of scientific detail missing in the film, which plays a critical role in the novel.
When watching the movie, it is very difficult to determine a singular most memorable scene. The amazing thing about this film is that it makes the audience laugh, cry, or keeps them on the edge of their seat at any point. Seniors, Kaison Hipsher-Walker and Braylee Pierce were both asked what the most memorable scene of the movie was to them. Kaison was unable to choose only one and said, (spoiler alert), “To me, the most memorable scene is when they finally reach the planet they have been searching for, and the screen turned colorful. As well as when Dr.Grace finds the alien creature and learns how to communicate with him.” Same goes for Braylee as well she was unable to choose just one scene and she said, “The most memorable scenes from the movie were when Grace was collecting the samples from the Petrova line with Rocky, the flashback scene where Stratt forced Grace to go on the mission, and when they were trying to get out of Adrian’s atmosphere and the two of them ended up severely injured.” Notice that both Kaison and Braylee had multiple favorite scenes of the film; that is how viewers should know it is a solid film.
Project Hail Mary has quickly become a major success for Amazon MGM, and now has fans debating whether the film or the original novel is better. This story, following Ryland Grace attempting to save Earth, displays each detail perfectly when evolving the story and relationship between Rocky and Grace. While many agree the movie is a strong adaptation, some feel the book is better because it includes more detailed science. Overall, the movie stands out for its emotional and heart-racing scenes, leaving a long-lasting impression on audiences, proving to be a memorable sci-fi experience.
