Canadian wildfires have been rampant since late May, burning down anything in their path. After the fires started spreading throughout the country, national support was sent to help. One of the wildfires near Yellowknife is 400 square miles or 256,000 acres.
Almost twenty-nine million acres of Canadian land have been burned so far this year, according to the national fire center, due to over 400 wildfires in the province of British Columbia. There are 230 wildfires in the Yellowknife area. Many of British Columbia’s fires have been started by lightning strikes from thunderstorms, according to the British Columbia Wildfire Service. Some of those storms were “dry,” not producing enough amounts of rain to help stop any fires. As global warming intensifies, scientists expect wildfire seasons will skyrocket in severity, especially as droughts and heat become more common and more intense across the world. The crisis has brought on a flood of international support, as fire and emergency response units have deployed to the country from nations including Brazil, Australia, and the U.S. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has sent federal support throughout the country. Wildfires in Canada’s Northwest Territories have been declared emergency affirmations by Trudeau, and an evacuation has been issued by air and land. Since the beginning of 2023, there have been 5,900 total wildfires in Quebec.
Smoke from the fires this summer have so far touched the Southern U.S. and have traveled across the Atlantic and into Europe. The air quality in the U.S. has dropped, rating at “moderate to unhealthy”. Smoke from the fires last month caused unhealthy conditions and skies to be tinted yellow, orange and red. At one point, New York City had the worst air quality in the entire world, due to smoke drifting across the U.S. Citizens with diseases such as lung cancer or heart disease are in critical danger from the air quality, and are suggested not to go outside.
In conclusion, wildfires in Canada have brought on support from countries all over the world, and the air quality in Canada and its neighbors have been declining severely.

I love this article. I like how the article explains how and where the fires took place. I like how it says how long the smoke lasted because you could never tell when the fires were put out.

I liked this article alot. There really has been a TON of wildfires this year. It did not help with outdoor sports this summer. I liked that you mentioned all the smoke moving into America. On certain days, the smoke made it seem like it was foggy in the middle of the day.
