In Lewis Cass, the high school and middle school band and choir have a competition. Every fall, a soap fundraiser is passed out to the band and choir students to raise money for their programs. Both programs compete to see who can sell the most items. The losing side of this competition has to wear something chosen by the directors of each program. This year, Mr. Hinshaw and Mr. Humburg, the band directors, chose for Mrs. Dubois, the choir director, to wear a marching band uniform. Mrs. Dubois chose for Mr. Hinshaw and Mr. Humburg to wear King’s Charisma dresses.
On the band side of our fundraiser, Mr. Humburg and Mr. Hinshaw will give us a pizza party if we sell five or more items. If we sell ten or more, we get our favorite candy bar. The pizza party is during Mentor on a Friday for high school and junior high students. This pizza party is to reward us for selling items and supporting the band program. Our band directors give out multiple fundraisers a year to help get the band more money to buy instruments and other items for the marching band. This is also a fun time to hangout with band friends and get a little snack. Even though all of us would like to see the band directors in dresses, we still need to support the band program all we can.
On the choir side of this fundraiser, it starts out the same as the band. If we sell five we get a pizza party and if we sell 10 we get a candy bar. In choir, the pizza party is a reward, but it’s not the biggest one in choir. The biggest reward for the choir is our uniforms for our songs. If we didn’t sell enough items and raise enough money we wouldn’t be able to wear uniforms during our concerts. These prizes aren’t the only thing that’s happening with this there is also a competition between the choir and band whichever class sells more than the opposite teacher has to wear a uniform from the other class. So if the choir wins, the band has to wear one of the costumes from the choir room.
No matter what outcome this fundraiser has, the money is all sent to both music programs to help buy anything needed. We all like to have a pizza party or a candy bar to celebrate our accomplishments. Even though we would like to see our band directors in dresses and Mrs. Dubois in a marching band uniform, these
fundraisers are part of our life as students and help out programs grow.
