Here at Lewis Cass High School, Lady Kings Basketball is a pretty big deal. This year, the junior varsity Lady Kings are 6-2 and recently won the Cass County tournament! The season has looked solid to start, so what does JV head coach Wes Hull think about it? When asked his thoughts about the season so far, he replied with, “I always look at JV as a level where the focus is on development, helping players grow and prepare for varsity, not just wins and losses. From that perspective, I think we’ve had some early successes. We’ve faced some strong teams right out of the gate, and our players have been put in pressure situations that have really helped them grow as basketball players.” Fans can tell that Lewis Cass girls’ JV basketball focuses more on improvement than wins and losses. Coach Hull was asked how his team has improved since the first game, and Hull said, “I think our biggest improvement since the first game is that we’ve started knocking down shots. We also had some newer players adjusting to the speed of JV compared to junior high, and you can see them catching up quickly. On top of that, several players are starting to understand the game on a deeper level. It’s been exciting to watch their growth.”
Sophomore, Shae Dishner was asked what she enjoys most about playing on JV. She answered with, “I enjoy getting to keep learning and improving every day.” Also, having fun is an important part of sports. Freshman, Abigail Albaugh, was asked what a funny moment from a practice or game she has had, and she said, “A funny moment this season so far has been when Amor got his 200th win. Everyone was so excited, and we got to splash water all over him in the locker room.” Sports aren’t just about trying to win all the time; it’s about having fun with people you enjoy being around.
After covering the core idea of Lady Kings JV basketball, it is time to review some of the recent games. The JV Lady Kings have beaten teams including Kokomo, Tri-Central, Oak Hill, Caston, and Pioneer. However, they came up short against Manchester and West Lafayette. Dishner was asked about her favorite game to play in, and she replied with, “My favorite game is most definitely the Kokomo game for both JV and Varsity because they were such intense games and we never gave up and fought till the very end of the game.” From personal JV experience, I would completely agree with Dishner’s statement. Albaugh was asked which game she is most excited about, and she said, “I’m most excited for the county tournament. I’m most excited for this because it is always fun to play other schools in our county.” The Lady Kings have a lot more games to look forward to.
As the season continues, the Lady Kings JV basketball team has shown growth, determination, and strong teamwork. Through hard practices and competitive games, the players have improved their skills and learned how to work together on and off the court. Win or lose, the Lady Kings continue to play with heart and effort, setting a positive example for the program’s future. Support your Lady Kings as they play this Thursday at home and Saturday at Carroll.
