New year, new school semester! Lewis Cass students come back to school from their holiday break with a brand new class schedule. There are different classes, different teachers, and possibly different lunch periods. Some students look forward to the second semester; other students think otherwise. Let’s dive into the best and worst parts of semester two.
Senior Ava Hubner shared her opinions on the new semester. When asked if she has more, less, or an equal amount of work in second semester compared to the first semester, Ava responded, “I think I have an equal amount of work as I did in semester 1.” Despite having a similar amount of work, Ava’s motivation has been going down to an all-time low since she is tired and “just wants to be done”. To me, it sounds like senioritis is getting to her. This is a hard time in the school year for students to be mentally motivated in schoolwork. Ava suggests “wanting to keep grades up is a way to stay engaged” towards the end of the school year. I agree with her advice because I have learned that having an educational goal helps me to be on track with classes and not fall behind, even when I feel sluggish.
Along with Ava, Senior Ally Berry thought there was not a huge difference between the two semesters. When asked if it was easy or hard to get used to the schedule change, Ally shared, “It was pretty easy getting used to my schedule change.” In the first semester, she was gone for classes at the polytech. Now, she has work-based learning in the morning, so she only had four classes that changed. In response to which semester she preferred, Ally said, “So far, I prefer semester 1 better because I like football season and the warm weather, which is not during second semester.” The senior year comes with additional work to plan for the future and prepare for the next step after high school. Because of this, Ally has been stressed about her plans for college and filling out scholarships in the second semester, while she only filled out college applications in the first semester, which is another reason why she preferred semester one over semester two. Ally notes that “senioritis is definitely real and hard to keep away”. Throughout it all, the most challenging part of second semester for her has been getting back into doing work after coming back from break.
In contrast to Ava and Ally, Sophomore Liz Sprow enjoys semester two more than semester one. In the first semester, Liz was overwhelmed with stress and was busy the whole time with her classes, but now she takes classes that are easier and more enjoyable. Despite the easier workload, Liz finds it difficult to be motivated this semester, as she claims, “I’m ready for it to end already.” She thinks the second semester goes by slowly and is ready for summer to come already.
It sounds like there are more negatives than positives from Lewis Cass students. This is the final push. It will be hard but worth it in the end. Seniors, let’s make the most of our time here in Lewis Cass while we still can.
