The second semester is a season of recovery, catching up, and locking your grades in. It is a tiring eighteen weeks for most students. The senioritis is kicking in, the juniors are prepping for the SAT, and the upperclassmen begin to struggle this time of year. The weather is frigid yet teases warmth, and many temperatures are just over the numbers below 60. The dream is to be somewhere warm, whether that is 1200 miles south in the beautiful panhandle of Florida weather, or under the comforter of your bed with a comfort snack; the two-week break is something students long for since December.
Students all over the school long for spring break and time away from school. Even if students can semi-tolerate the noisy hallways and long, agonizingly boring classes, there is a part of every student that looks forward to spring break. Lewis Cass differs from its surrounding schools. Many Cass County schools only get one week of spring break, while Lewis Cass gets two weeks, although the schedule is changing next year. Lewis Cass has also been known to have a longer fall break than most surrounding schools, which only get around a week, and starting next year, we will get only two days. Cass kids just love to get away! Spring break comes with many expectations. Travel, food, family, friends, and most of all, time away from school are what students look forward to most. Some students choose to leave the area for spring break to get away, while others choose to stay in Cass County to enjoy their break at home.
Whether students choose to stay in bed and sleep in, or go somewhere tropical to enjoy time under the sun, most students are glad to get some time away. The Courier surveyed high school students, and out of 163 students who filled out a survey, 91 said they were traveling somewhere, while 70 were staying home. A wide variety of places were mentioned in the survey. From the basic trip to Florida to the reaches of the Dominican Republic, Lewis Cass students will be broadening their horizons through travel. Recently, the band and choir took a trip to Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida, which counted as many students’ spring break. Some counted that as their spring break, while others are still traveling to other destinations.
Students who filled out the survey answered with a variety of places. Most said they plan to travel to Florida, Texas, or other common places like Tennessee or Kentucky. There were also around ten students who are leaving the United States to sit under the sun. A group of seniors is traveling to the Dominican Republic, and there are a few traveling to Mexico, and one student is going to Puerto Rico. The warm weather treats people well, and students are doing all they can to remain where they are. With sports and other activities scheduled the second week of spring break, it is hard to stay at a dream destination for as long as some would like, but a little time away is enough to refresh. For those staying home, it may be hard to have as much fun without getting FOMO (fear of missing out), but some tanning packages and a good walk outside should be enough to get by.
Whether students choose to fly somewhere tropical, drive somewhere near, or just lie in their beds, spring break is a necessity that every student cherishes. It is time to get away, catch up with friends, and forget about the stress of school. So buckle up, or stay right here, and just hope spring break does not go by too fast!
