Last month, right before spring break, one of Lewis Cass’ greatest athletes of all time signed her life away to Indiana University, Indianapolis (IU Indy), to continue her athletic career. Lewis Cass senior, Aftin Griffin, has owned the spotlight in all of her sports during her time at Lewis Cass. Griffin dominated the cross country course, competing in the state race for three years in a row and winning 2A runner of the year. She dominated on the basketball court, scoring 1000 points even with an injured hand, and she is currently dominating her track season.
Aftin has been a natural-born runner ever since she came into this world, probably since she ran out of the womb. Since elementary school, Aftin was always the fastest girl in school and won the elementary Fun Run every year, except in kindergarten when AnnaLeigh Hedrick won. This laid the path for Aftin’s high school career. On March 17, 2026, Griffin decided to sign to become a Jaguar at Indiana University, Indianapolis. According to the Indiana University Indianapolis’ official website, IU Indy was once known as IUPUI before the big split. IU Indy is located in the heart of the Capital and has a very diverse community. As reported by the IU Indy Athletics website, it is a Division 1, NCAA athletics school, which means they compete in the highest level of intercollegiate sports.
Griffin initially made her decision to attend IU Indy early on in the school year, but decided to do her signing during track season. She signed to continue her cross country and track career as a Division 1 runner and as an IU Indy Jag. While at IU Indy, Griffin said that as she continues to improve in her cross country and track career, she hopes to decide on an initial career path. Aftin followed with “I hope to make lots of new friends and discover what I want to do with my life.” Griffin stated that one of the major changes between IU Indy and Lewis Cass is obviously the size. She said,“There are about 25,000 students at IU Indy, and it is in the city instead of out in a small town, so I will have to adjust to that.”
At Griffin’s signing, she was surrounded by many people who love and support her. She invited the girls’ basketball team, except Kylie Logan, the girls’ cross country team, the girls’ track and field team, and a few other friends. Along with the teams and friends, her parents, grandparents, other family members, and high school coaches were also invited.
Overall, Lewis Cass and the athletic teams she participated in will definitely miss the one and only Aftin Griffin and all that she has accomplished at this school. Hopefully, she has a successful career at IU Indy and continues to break records for them as she did here. Good luck, Aftin Griffin, on your upcoming collegiate career and finding a major that suits you perfectly!
