The crowd at the Logansport Berry Bowl cheered loudly as the Lewis Cass Lady Kings Basketball team lifted the Cass County Tournament trophy, an achievement that brought pride to fans, families, and a community that has backed this team all season long. For the second year in a row, the Lady Kings brought home the Cass County Championship trophy for both varsity and junior varsity. Girls’ Head Coach Amor was asked what goals he had for his team going into the tournament, and said, “Our goals from the beginning of the season included a Cass County Championship. We felt it was our tournament to lose.”
Preparation is a vital part of going far in a tournament such as the Cass County tournament; however, the Lady Kings were cut short their ability to properly prepare for the first game against the Caston Lady Comets. Coach Amor was asked if the weather caused some nerves for him and his team, and replied, “The weather definitely caused some nerves on my end. I pride myself on my preparation. We had zero going into the tournament. We practiced the Saturday after Thanksgiving, and then the snow kept us out of the gym until we showed up to play Caston on Wednesday. And I think our play showed we were rusty. We were not at our best. Fortunately, I have some resilient kids who were able to find a way to get past a tough Caston team.” The first round of the tournament ended with a final score of 44-39 Cass coming out on top. After defeating Caston, the Lady Kings continued preparing to play a 2-4 Pioneer team in the Championship game on Saturday, December 6, 2025. With help from the Lady Kings’ speed, deep bench, and resilience, they achieved a 66-44 win. Even though each player had a significant part in this win, there were some outstanding performances from Aftin Griffin, Anna Hedrick, and Presley Johnson. Coach Amor added, “We had a lot of kids play well in the tournament. Aftin Griffin was able to keep us alive and hit all four of our team’s three-pointers against Caston as she put up a team-high sixteen points. Sophomore, Presley Johnson had a huge game as well. Her thirteen points were huge. And we wouldn’t win without Anna Hedrick. Hedrick leads us in steals, assists, and rebounds, and is only a few points behind Aftin (Griffin). Anna had six steals and four assists to go along with her fourteen points in the championship game vs Pioneer. There’s a reason those three girls were selected for the All-Tournament Team.”
Senior, Aftin Griffin was asked how it felt receiving All-Tourney MVP, and said, “It was an amazing feeling to be able to receive this award in my final season. From freshman year, I always looked up to the players who received this award, so it was a full-circle moment to receive the All-Tourney MVP.” Hedrick was asked what some of her goals were for the tournament, and said, “A goal I had for this tournament was to not go into it with too much confidence that we would win. Obviously, I had to have a winning mindset to be successful, but I didn’t want to overlook any team. Another goal I had was to not fall off the ladder when I had to cut down the net.” Sophomore, Presley Johnson had a great game against Caston and was asked how it felt to achieve All-Tourney team and said, “I feel honored to be picked for the All-Tourney team since I have worked hard to achieve this goal.”
All in all, the Lady Kings had some great goals set that they had the honor to achieve, but they are just starting. Coach Amor was asked about the future goals and said, “We are getting into the toughest part of our schedule. We have some tough conference opponents coming up. Our girls want to remain undefeated, but most importantly, they want to win the conference. So our next few games are going to really test us. It should be some really good basketball.” Good luck to the Lady Kings as they continue through the season!
The boys’ team kicked off their season on November 25 in a competitive game against Carroll. The boys brought home a great win. Senior, Owen Cotner-Graves, gave a highlight on the game, “The first game against Carroll was a little rough. After not shooting the ball well and being in foul trouble early on the game was tied at halftime. Going into the second half went a little bit better. We came out in a 2-3 zone defense and slowed down their offense. Getting seventeen deflections and thirteen steals defensively and only having nine turnovers offensively helped get us the win. It wasn’t pretty, and we have a lot to improve on, but in the end, it goes down as a win.” The boys have a game this Saturday, December 13, 2025, against Madison Grant, and then will continue on to the Cass County Tournament on December 23, 2025. Cass plays at noon, and then the Championship game will be at 8 pm. Good luck to the boys in their future games!
