‘Twas the night before the Bearista and all through the house not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse. The Starbucks cards were loaded on their apps with care. In hopes that their new Bearista cups soon would be there.
Starbucks has once again captured the hearts of millions nationwide. The release of this new holiday hit has been nothing short of a rising trend, causing a huge social media uproar. Consumers were flocking to stores hours before opening. The most astounding part of it all is that it is not even an iconic new holiday drink. That is right, the new Starbucks craze is a cup.
On November 6, 2025, Starbucks released its iconic “Bear-ista” cup. This twenty-ounce bear-shaped glass is one of the most viral Starbucks trends, and it has taken social media by storm.
November 4 was the hard launch of the crazed cup on social media. The company posted a short promotional clip of a barista making an iced coffee in the bear with a caption that read, “who’s getting a bearista cup on 11/6 lmk”. This immediately reached countless numbers of positive fan engagements. Likes and fans flooded the comment section of the post with excitement and anticipation. Starbucks then posted an additional clip on their socials on the fifth that received just as much attention as the first. Leaving fans highly anticipating the morning to come.
The morning of November 6 was finally there. Fans were lining up outside coffee shop doors and peacefully awaiting in drive-thru lines, arriving at locations as early as 3 AM. Due to Starbucks’ lack of information on their social media posts, consumers were left blind to the availability of the bear glasses. Nobody knew how many Bearistas would be released or how many locations would have them available. As doors across the nation were opening, consumers’ frustration began to rise. Many fans were left disappointed when they found out they were too late to get their hands on the limited number of glasses, or the fact that their location did not even have them in the first place. That is right, consumers were outraged by the fact that their typical Starbucks locations they were depending on, did not even have the glass to begin with.
Thus setting off a surge of social media complaints and criticism. For You Pages and Instagram feeds were flooded with backlash of the release and “storytimes” of disappointed and enraged consumers. Nina Derwin from The Kitchn wrote that her editing and writing teams visited over eleven locations to track down at least one, but eventually struck out, just like the other millions of consumers. ENews quotes another furious customer saying, “I got up at 4 am and drove to a location that specifically said it would have this cup. I was first in line, but they didn’t have it. I drove to four more locations, none of them had it and said they never did,” the consumer was quoted. “If Starbucks is going to excite people over this, then make sure ALL stores have enough supply. Many fanatics were disappointed. No one knows exactly how many cups were released, but consumers do know that there definitely were not enough.
Starbucks eventually responded to the backlash in hopes of putting raging consumers at ease. The company stated the reaction to the cup exceeded their expectations, and despite shipping more cups to coffeehouses than almost any other item this holiday season, it sold out in no time. Starbucks also mentioned that they do not plan on releasing any more of the glasses, but consumers can anticipate more exciting holiday lunches to come. But do not fret! You can still buy the adorable Bearistas on eBay (and other sketchy websites) for the small price of $380! Yes, the lucky lads who did get their hands on the glasses are now reselling them for over 10 times the price! So, not all hope is lost! Or if you do not want to spend the money, there are several videos on Social Media demonstrating how to create your own!
In conclusion, this is just another trend-setting gimmick that massive companies create to profit more from consumers. I am sure that in the next few months, there will be another “Must Have” or “Must Try” item that gets consumers to dump their money on. Is it a genius marketing tactic? Yes. Does it cause more harm than good? Also yes. Situations like this have been happening for centuries and are bound to happen for the rest of eternity, but that never stops people from throwing their money away.
