As snow was falling on the ground and Christmas and holiday celebrations came to an end, there was only one activity left for students to look forward to: The SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) Dance. Every year, the Lewis Cass SADD Club hosts a dance during the winter season that each student at Cass is able to enjoy. This year, students stepped into a floral wonderland with the theme centering around a secret garden.
In contrast to the weather outside, stepping inside the Garden Gate venue transformed from a winter wonderland to a whimsical garden, where flowers bloomed in every corner, and the air felt light and breezy. Balloons could be seen from any part of the venue, and the color scheme was perfect for the floral feel. Many students enjoyed the snack table, put on display by the club, that included assortments of fruits, sandwiches, cookies, and, of course, plenty of water. The night was ready to begin right at seven in the evening as students began to arrive at the dance.
One of the most enjoyable parts of the night for many students was all the dancing they were able to do. Everyone hung out with friends, family, and dates. Maleigh Deeter, a freshman at Lewis Cass, said her favorite part was being able to experience this dance for the first time, being surrounded by her friends and cousins. In contrast to Maleigh, Isabella See, a junior, explained how her favorite part of the night was not being at the dance itself, but being able to get ready beforehand with friends, going out to eat, and spending time with them before, during, and after the dance. Even though the dance was not her favorite part of the night, Isabella said, “The overall atmosphere at the dance was good, I was pumped!”
Of course, it would not be a dance without the DJ playing the best music. Many students’ favorite songs included “Get Low” by Lil Jon and the East Side Boyz and “Wobble” by V.I.C. People were able to dance around with friends, sing their favorite songs at the top of their lungs, and dance with their date in the twinkling lights. Not only was the dancing super popular, but the photo-taking station allowed every person who attended to take a cute picture, whether it was with friends or a date, to keep the memory of this dance alive and in their camera roll. Overall, the dance was a huge success as everyone had a smile on their face.
Students would not have been able to have this amazing night without the SADD Club here at Lewis Cass spending countless hours planning, organizing, and setting up for this dance. Trinety Gillem, a senior and SADD Club president, said the dance was exactly what the whole club envisioned. The beautiful floral arrangements and details really brought the dance to life. She stated how the hardest part of the dance was “different members of the club disagreeing with each other over ideas they had for the dance,” but everything worked out in the end as the club made it possible for everyone to have a night filled with joy and laughter.
Overall, the dance was an amazing experience that everyone will remember for the rest of their lives. Maleigh even explained how she would definitely recommend going to the dance next year if you did not get a chance this year. She was very glad she decided to go, as she had such a memorable and spectacular night. The SADD club is so pleased with the turnout, and they hope to see everyone there again next year.
