Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, and that means love is in the air. On Valentine’s Day, people tend to spend the majority of their time with their loved ones. Whether that is going out for a romantic dinner with their significant other, watching movies at home, or hosting a Galentine’s with friends, there is always something to do during the special holiday full of love. The main activity I think people participate in is watching romantic comedy movies (rom coms).
According to an article by Chelsey Sanchez, the most-watched romantic comedies of all time are She’s the Man, Love Actually, Pretty Woman, The Proposal, You’ve Got Mail, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, Notting Hill, When Harry Met Sally, and 10 Things I Hate About You. Out of these ranked rom-coms, my favorite would have to be The Proposal, starring Ryan Reynolds and Sandra Bullock. The Proposal is about a New York editor named Margaret who faces deportation, and convinces her assistant Andrew to marry her in return for a promotion. However, when she visits his hometown, it changes her in many ways. Most audiences have watched a rom-com before, which is why The Courier asked the students here at Lewis Cass about some of their favorites.
After surveying the students here at Lewis Cass about their favorite romantic comedies, the highest-ranked rom-com was 10 Things I Hate About You. I would have to agree with this result because it is my next favorite rom-com after The Proposal. 10 Things I Hate About You stars Heath Ledger and Julia Stiles. It is about a high school boy named Cameron who can’t date this girl named Bianca until her anti-social older sister Kat has a boyfriend. So, Cameron pays a mysterious boy named Patrick to charm Kat. The next rom-com most watched was How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days. This class romantic comedy features Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey. This movie is about an advertising executive and ladies’ man who is trying to win a big campaign, and bets that he can make a woman fall in love with him in 10 days. The third highest-ranked rom-com was She’s The Man, which stars Channing Tatum and Amanda Bynes. In this movie, a girl disguises herself as her own brother. Tied for fourth overall includes The Proposal and 13 Going on 30. The students of Lewis Cass then ranked Notting Hill, When Harry Met Sally, Pretty Woman, and You’ve Got Mail all the same. I think these movies are phenomenal; however, they were not anyone’s first choices. On the survey, lastly ranked was the rom-com Love Actually. I think Love Actually was listed last because it is more of a Christmas rom-com, and I do not think many people have seen it. Overall, I would have to agree with all of the high school students’ opinions on their favorite romantic comedy movies.
In conclusion, I definitely recommend watching a romantic comedy movie anytime, but specifically on Valentine’s Day. Watching a rom-com always tends to brighten my mood, and I know it will do the same for others. There are also a variety of different rom-coms people can watch. According to high school students at Lewis Cass, the top three best rom-coms include 10 Things I Hate About You, She’s the Man, and How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days. Overall, I believe romantic comedies are the best movie genre of all time. Now, go spend Valentine’s Day watching one of the top-ranked rom coms according to students here at Lewis Cass!
