Have you noticed that sports have changed over the years from rules and safety to uniforms and equality? The world of sports used to be different maybe for the better, maybe for the worse but sports have definitely changed. Baseball has changed over time because the uniforms, rules, and the safety of the players have changed throughout the years.
One of the changes in baseball uniforms were the baseball pants. Players used to wear quilted trousers but the Cincinnati Red Sox introduced the idea of “knickers”, which were lighter and more beneficial for their players. In 1976, the Chicago White Sox were the first team to wear shorts to play baseball. Another change is baseball socks. They used to be able to be seen when they were worn, but they didn’t absorb sweat that well. So, baseball players started lowering their pants to still protect their legs and to better help absorb their sweat.
Rule changes have changed baseball as well. The changes either helped the player or made playing baseball a little bit harder. The rules have changed by what players are allowed to do, where coaches are allowed to stand, and the measurements of the baseball field. For example, most field dugouts do not allow the visiting team to have food or drinks that aren’t water in the dugout. Another example is the no mercy rule which means that after so many innings and points the game is stopped.
The safety of the baseball players have improved over the years. The safety has improved by pitchers only being allowed to pitch so many pitches, the equipment has been upgraded, and injuries have been taken more seriously. Pitchers can only throw around 120 pitches a day because if they did more they could throw out their arm. Baseball equipment has improved by the gloves being made nicer and helmets being enforced. Injuries are not pushed aside like they used to be, which means not as many baseball players are seriously injured as they would be if they kept playing.
In conclusion, baseball has changed in many ways over the years. Some examples could be the uniforms, rules, and safety of baseball players. These have changed in ways like uniforms used to be shorts and have sleeveless tops, many rules have been added, and injuries are no longer looked over. One famous quote by the greatest baseball player of all time is this. “Every strike brings me closer to a home run” – Babe Ruth
