Managing Life

Managing Life

We all have to deal with things we didn’t choose to. These types of things appear everywhere in daily life. Maybe it’s working with people you don’t like. Maybe it’s being put on a morning shift when you wanted an afternoon. Maybe there was a really long line at the grocery store and you were planning on a quick trip. Recently, I’ve been experiencing things like this with the people in my classes, my homework, and my work.

When it comes to homework, there are plenty of things to do in order to deal with the inconveniences. One option is simply not doing the homework. I do this occasionally, but I try not to often. Another option is to get the answers from someone else, which I don’t do unless I don’t understand the assignment (and even then I ask them to explain it to me). My personal choice is to do the assignment(s) in chunks. Generally working for 20-30 minutes then following with a 5-10 minute break.

However when it comes to classes, there are fewer ways to deal with it. There are some people that are very loud and some that are very mean and aggressive. I didn’t choose to be in the classes, however I have ways to deal with this. If the teacher allows, I like to listen to music. However if I don’t have earbuds or the teacher doesn’t allow listening to music, it’s a bit more difficult to deal with. Trying to focus on the task at hand is one way to handle it, but it can be difficult, especially if everyone in the class is being loud. Sometimes I just play games on my phone and text my friends. This is one one of the hardest things to deal with though. There aren’t many things you can do to deal with the classroom setting that you aren’t choosing to be in.

When it comes to work, there are even fewer things I can do. If I’m scheduled with a server or host I don’t get along with, I simply try to avoid them and interact with them as little as possible. If I’m scheduled to cover someone’s shift, I try to find the positives. Maybe I’ll make good tips, or I’ll have more hours on my next check. There truly aren’t many things I can do to handle inconveniences at work, but I always do my best not to let them bother me.

In conclusion, everyone has to deal with things they don’t choose.  While this is my opinion on the best way to handle these situations, you might handle them differently. Finding an escape and handling inconveniences is part of life. At some point we all need to learn. It’s a game of trial and error. What works for you may not work for others. Personally, breaking things down, music, and just keeping to myself work for me, but maybe they won’t for you.
